The South Sydney Rabbitohs have defeated the Canberra Raiders 36-18 in front of 10,054 fans a ANZ Stadium.
In a match what was far from worthy of being a Friday night block buster both sides were slow to get off the mark.
Three tries in six minutes saw South Sydney right on the front foot in the opening 20.
Jason Hunt opened the scoring in the 12th minute, scoring courtesy of a wonderful pass from Greg Inglis. Adam Reynolds missed the conversion.
Dave Taylor was unstoppabble a few metres from the line four minutes later as he ran over the Raiders' defence to score. Reynolds missed the conversion again.
Inglis did it all himself in the 18th minute when he ran 40 metres to score. Reynolds had no problem converting on this occasion.
A break down the short side Edrick Lee saw the Raiders open up their scoring in the 25th minute through Jarrod Crocker. Crocker missed the conversion.
Crocker was over again in the 29th minute, this time it was courtesy of a Sam Williams grubber. Crocker missed the conversion again, leaving the Raiders a converted try behind.
Back-to-back penalties saw the Raiders in prime attacking position again shortly before half-time and they capitalised through Jeff Thompson who sliced through some soft defence to score.
Neither team could get their act together early in the second half, with both sides guilty of butchering opportunities.
The homeside finally found their stride in the 50th minute with Ben Lowe scoring under the posts. Issac Luke was given goal kicking duties and added the extras.
South Sydney were over again three minutes later through Dylan Farell. Luke added the extras from right in front.
Inglis put Taylor over in the 57th minute. Luke's boot was on the money again to increase the South Sydney lead to 20.
The homeside wasted several opportunities to extend their lead over the next ten minutes before Inglis claimed his second in the 71st minute.
A knock on from the kick off saw the Raiders go right on the attack moments later and the Raiders made the most of it with Reece Robinson running over the Rabbits' defence to score in the 73rd minute.
Four back-to-back sets following the try were not enough to get the Raiders over the try line again and the score was unchanged after the full-time hooter.
Despite scoring seven tries to the Raiders four, the South Sydney defence was guilty of going to sleep during several points of the game and will need to improve when they play a rejuvenated Bulldogs' outfit next Saturday.
As for the Raiders they will host the West Tigers in Canberra next week and will need to step up their game significantly.
