Souths Logan Magpies-News

The Magpie fledglings have taken flight in the last few months and have now not lost a game since round three. Last weekend, Chris Phelan?s Colts provided yet another thrilling win, annihilating Runaway Bay 56-18 at Magpie Headquarters at Davies Park. In the 2004 season, the Magpie Colts have only lost two games and have drawn another two, taking their total number of victories to five, putting them equal fourth on the ladder with 12 points. The team is showing continual improvement under the guidance of Coach Chris Phelan. This season, five Colts have played up in the Queensland Cup premier team. The Colts were last weekend led enthusiastically from the half back combination of Ashley ?The Rooster? Millwood and Mehau Phillip. Captain Darcey Sumner, who crossed the try line twice on Sunday, displayed good leadership qualities from full back and was soundly supported by forwards Jeremy Toohey, Michael Costa, Justin Loewe and back rowers Elron Yasso and John Oliver. Centre Luke Major scored two tries and found himself the team?s goal kicker with five successful conversions. Dave Gorman followed on from Friday?s winning relay performance to score a winger?s try under the posts. Hooker Callam Belsham was replaced injured by Mitchell Tanzer who had his first game in 12 months. In the A-Grade division, the Magpies secured their 54-4 win over Runaway Bay at half time on Sunday. The visiting team was down on numbers and was no match for the superior Magpies who wrapped up the game before half time, leading game officials to call of the match with a half yet to be played. Rick Dodd, playing in the centres, scored three tries which will boost the confidence of the dual registered Canberra Raiders player. Aaron McMahon?s game was complemented by terrific goal kicking and he booted five to take his personal season total to 14. The bench players proved their worth with Matt Templeton, Grant Newman and Matt Bell all scoring tries in the first and only half of the game. The Queensland Cup team last weekend looked promising after coming back from an early 18-point deficit to be equal Young Guns at half time, and give Magpie fans some hope the team might finish what they started last week. However, it was not to be and the score line blew out to an irrecoverable 64-18. The Club?s future is brightened this week by the return from injury of senior players Alwyn Simpson, Nick Emmett and Daniel Irvine ahead of this weekend?s clash with Tweed Heads.
