St Helens withstood a strong Hull KR fightback to claim the points at Langtree Park.
Hull KR could not have wished for a worst start as their bus broke down on route to the ground meaning they arrived, only 50-minutes before the kick off.
Saints made the most of this as scrum-half Jonny Lomax ghosted through to score beneath the posts. Shortly later Lomax turned provider as he got Paul Wellens over for try number 2.
The ruthless scoring continued for St Helens as Lee Gaskell's grubber kick bounced kindly into the grateful arms of Wellens who touched down with ease. Tommy Makinson's goal made it 16 points after as many minutes and more was to follow.
Another fine attacking kick, this time from Jon Wilkin, was collected and touched down by teenage centre Josh Jones. Tony Puletua then started a length of the field move in which Jones made it a double as the home side led 26-0.
But Rovers finally awoke and roared back with three tries in the last 10 minutes of the half. A close-range try from Scott Taylor started things rolling. Graeme Horne sent Sam Latus in at the corner for the second.
On the stroke of half-time Scott Murrell and Ben Galea combined to send Latus in for his second try, with Dobson's goal going in off the uprights to make it 26-16 at the break.
The scoring spell continued after the restart as Taylor scored his second try of the game after a mistake by Francis Meli. Rovers hit the front for the first time when Josh Hodgson touched down Dobson's grubber kick as Saints looked to have thrown the game away.
However, eight minutes from time Anthony Laffranchi ran a good line to crash through from close range. Makinson missed the easy conversion.
But a surge from Meli down the wing created the position for Puletua crash to over and spare St Helens blushes as they held on for the win.

Salford City Reds turned in a classy attacking performance to sweep past Warrington Wolves at the Salford City Stadium.
Warrington rested several players ahead of a run of games in a short period of time. This showed as Salford flew out of the blocks.
Danny Williams got things under way by taking a return pass from Sean Gleeson to score out wide. Daniel Holdsworth converted from the touchline.
It got even better for the hosts on 25-minutes as Jodie Broughton showed electrifying pace to round Rhys Evans and go over in the corner.
Two minutes later it was 18-0 Holdsworth with Vinny Anderson diving onto Matty Smith's kick with. Then the City Reds were in dream land as Anderson got Luke Adamson away and in support was Luke Pattern. Holdsworth tagged on the extras as on the half hour the game seemed to be over.
Warrington needed a stroke of luck to finally get on the scoresheet with Gareth O'Brien's crossfield kick rebounding off the post for ex City Red Stefan Ratchford to touch down and cut the deficit to 24-6 at the interval.
In the early stages of the second half, Salford ran the Wolves ragged. Broughton grabbed his second try from Moon's pass to stretch the advantage to 28-6 and Smith cut inside for the hosts' sixth try.
A blistering move was finished off by Anderson who forced his way over from dummy-half to make it 40-6 after 50 minutes. Williams made it a double thanks to good work by his centre partner Gleeson.
The towel was not thrown in by Warrington as Richard Myler scampered over against his old club before Chris Riley and Matty Blythe all scored consolations to give the scoreline a healthier look.
However, it was the City Reds night as fittingly Patten crossed on the full time hooter for his side's ninth touchdown to complete a comprehensive win.

Bradford Bulls put all their off the field problems to one side as they stunned league leaders Wigan Warriors at DW Stadium.
On Tuesday, the Bulls were put into administration and had 10 working days to find a new buyer or face liquidation.
They also had the most difficult task in Super League by going to the home of the league leaders who were on a thirteen match winning run.
Wigan took the lead after just three minutes, with Gareth Hock offloading for George Carmont to send winger Anthony Gelling over.
The visitors were then reduced to 12 men when Karl Pryce was sin-binned for holding down Darrell Goulding in the tackle to prevent a quick play-the-ball and the Warriors took advantage as 20 year old full back Jack Murphy marked his debut by bursting thorugh to score from the half way line.
Josh Charnley's goal made it 10-0, but Bradford would not give in and showed their spirit as they hit back to take the lead with two tries in 10 minutes.
Scrum-half Luke Gale combined superbly with Brett Kearney and Jarrod Sammut to send Pryce in before Keith Lulia broke free down the left wing and got the supporting Kearney over. Gale kicked both conversions to make it 12-10.
And, although Sean O'Loughlin's short pass close to the line got Ben Flower over to score his first try for Wigan. The Bulls regained the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Prop Tom Burgess tore down the middle before working the ball out wide for Lulia to finish off as the Yorkshire side went into the break with a slender 18-16 lead.
Eleven minutes after the restart Dom Crosby went thorugh a gap as the home side edged ahead again. Charnley's third goal made it 22-18.
However, there was to be a turning point in the game as Wigan were reduced to 12 men for the last 25 minutes when hooker Michael McIlorum was sent off for punching Oliver Elima.
That gave the Bulls all the extra confidence they needed as on 70-minutes Elliott Whitehead jinked his way over for the visitors fourth try of the night. Gale made it four from four.
And when Charnley made a mess of Gale's crossfield kick to present Pryce with his second try , Bradford made sure of the unlikely win as Wigan' winning run was put to an end.

Catalan Dragons closed to within one point of second place Warrington Wolves with a routine win over Wakefield Wildcats at Stade Gilbert Brutus Perpignan.
With the teams above them loosing, Catalan had a big chance in closing the gap.
An early mistake from Richard Mathers was punished by Vincent Duport, who drew in the defence and sent Damien Blanch racing down the line to touch down and give the hosts the early lead.
Next to score was the old stager Steve Menzies who intercepted on his own 10-metre line, and raced the 38year-old raced 90 metres to score.
Wakefield would not lie down and hit back with a superb individual effort from Ali Lauitiiti .The New Zealander used his superb handling skills to dummy his way over the line. Paul Sykes converted to narrow the gap to 12-6.
Normal service resumed as ex Knights half Scott Dureau laid on Menzies' second try on a plate, his short ball put the big second rower through a gap in the Wildcats defence to score. Dureau made it three from three as the French outfit led 18-6 at half-time.
From the restart, the visitors were back in trouble as a high Dureau kick again caused havoc in their defence and Peter Fox fumbled the ball twice under pressure before Clint Greenshields put boot to ball and won the race to touch the ball down under the posts to score.
Kyle Trout pulled one back by squeezing his way over. But with 15 minutes remaining, the hosts killed off Wakefield as Vincent Duport' offload sent Blanch over in the right hand corner.
Dureau kicked the touchline conversion and with just six minutes left, a short goal-line drop out gifted the hosts field position and Ian Henderson combined with Greenshields to send Blanch in for his hat-trick as the Dragons recorded an easy win.
London Broncos 12

Leeds Rhinos made it three wins on the bounce by routing London Broncos at Twickenham Stoop.
London were looking for back-to-back home wins against a Leeds team they did the league double over last year.
The hosts made the better start and took the game to the Rhinos in the early stages and Led by influential skipper Craig Gower they put the visitors under pressure.
After Julien Rinaldi surging run took the Broncos deep into Leeds territory, Chris Bailey rounded things off by scoring next to the posts. Michael Witt added the easy conversion.
Throwing on substitute hooker Shaun Lunt, Leeds hit back as he helped himself to quick fire brace with two close range efforts. Kevin made no mistake with the extras as the visitors led 12-6.
Gaining the confidence, the Rhinos upped the tempo and hit London with another two try burst before the break. Danny McGuire showed his ability of support play by strolling over for a brace on 37 and 39 minutes to give his side a 24-6 lead at half time.
Needing to lift their game, the Londoners did so and got back into the contest five minutes after the restart thanks to some shocking play from the visitors. Zac Hardaker's pass went to ground, allowing Kieran Dixon the simplest of tasks of picking up possession and cantering over.
Suddenly the Broncos had their tails up, although they remained two scores behind.
London came mightily close to reducing that to one score in the 54th minute, David Howell unable to hold what would have been a try-scoring pass from Witt.
Showing their Champions quality, Leeds absorbed everything thrown at them and hit back to put the Broncos to the saw by adding six tries in the last quarter of the game. Carl Ablett made the bust for McGuire to complete his hat-trick and get things underway.
As the hosts fell apart the floodgates opened, Ablett got one himself then McGuire was soon at it again, cantering over for his fourth after a break from Jamie Jones-Buchanan.
Further late scores were to follow from Hardaker, Rob Burrow and Kylie Leuluai in the final eight minutes as Leeds romped home.
Hull FC 28

Hull FC left it late as they edged past Huddersfield Giants at the KC Stadium.
Both these teams were not in good form. Hull were on a five match loosing run and the Giants had only one win in their last five games.
Richard Horne got Hull on their way early on as he brushed off the attempted challenge of Luke George to get winger Ben Crooks.
Huddersfield got on terms midway through the first half when a run from exciting full-back Greg Eden created the space for centre Leroy Cudjoe to jink his way over.
The Black and Whites hit back in style after a crisp passing move on 32 minutes was finished off by Tom Briscoe at the corner and Danny Tickle adding the difficult conversion to lead 10-6.
But, on the half time hooter ex Hull player Danny Brough was put through a gap by Scott Moore and the supporting David Faiumu went over. Brough added the extras to give the Giants a narrow 12-10 advantage.
Huddersfield made a good start to the second half as captain Kevin Brown pounced on a kick by Hull scrum-half Brett Seymour and they moved the ball out for Aaron Murphy to score out wide..
Enter Aaron Heremaia who got the East Yorkshire side back into the game on 66 minutes when he dummied his way over from 30 metres out, and Hull went back in front four minutes later when Kirk Yeaman pounced on a careless offload by Huddersfield's England prop Eorl Crabtree to score.
The game was now end-to-end as Crabtree quickly made amends by supporting a break by Faiumu to score and Brough kicked his fourth goal.
However, in a final twist Huddersfield conceded possession by allowing the re-start to go into touch and Yeaman punished them with his second try to snatch the game as the Black and Whites got a much needed two points.
Widnes Vikings 40

Widnes Vikings moved off the bottom of the table with a comprehensive win over Castleford Tigers at Stobart Stadium.
Stefan Marsh got the Vikings off to the perfect start as he latched on to a Cameron Phelps' pass to opening the scoring after two minutes.
The Tigers, who played most of the game without a recognised halfback, hit back thorugh Nick Youngquest.
But, Widnes continued to dominate and by half-time they opened up an 18-6 lead. Second-rower Frank Winterstein barged his way over from close range in the 22nd minute before prop Ben Davies added a third try just before the interval.
After Castleford made a better start to the second period, Widnes got back in control as hooker Paul McShane crashed over from the dummy half and Joe Mellor added the fifth home try shortly after.
Stuart Jones scored a consolation for the poor Tigers, but the Vikings continued to press as debutant Eamon O'Carroll pounced on McShane's dab through.
Patrick Ah Van scored one himself to go with his five goals, as Widnes claimed a dominant win to send London Broncos to the bottom of the Stobart Super League table.
