NORTHS DEVILS 25 defeat TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS 22
His side contains a scattering of players bracing themselves for the Melbourne Storm, but Norths coach Wayne Treleaven still had a sense of trepidation when the clouds rolled in at Bishop Park.
Thankfully for the Devils? mentor, an unusually tempestuous Brisbane afternoon failed to disrupt his young charges, who scored a vital 25-22 win against Tweed Heads.
?They were tough conditions to play in. It?s been a while since we?ve had a real wet game like that here,? Treleaven said.
?We knew it wasn?t going to be easy. Tweed hadn?t been beaten for something like six weeks.
?In saying that, we should have done it easier than we ended up doing it. We bombed quite a few tries.?
Indeed the final result made the match look much closer than it was for the majority of proceedings. Norths led 18-4 at halftime and then 25-10 after a converted try and a field goal by half Luke Millwood.
The Seagulls though, as they are wont to do, refused to succumb peacefully and fought all the way to the death.
?We spoke before the game about combating their enthusiasm and their ability to play for each other,? Treleaven revealed.
?It wasn?t until that last bit of the game that they had a chance to win it.?
Most impressive for the victors was tenacious hooker Nathan Friend, while Rob Tanielu continued to find form ahead of his appearance for City next week.
A player with a big future according to Treleaven ? centre Ryan Shortland (pictured) ? set up his outside man Josh Tatupu beautifully and also scored a try himself.
?Ryan?s kicked on and is playing good footy. He has some style about his play,? Treleaven said.
Among those to score for Tweed was teenager and former junior tennis champion Selasi Berdie, impressive over recent weeks for the Seagulls.
Norths next play against Central in Rockhampton on July 3, while Tweed Heads hosts Easts the following day at the Piggabeen Complex.
NORTHS 25 (Josh Tatupu, Ryan Shortland, Marc Brentnall, Anthony Boyd tries; Luke Millwood 4 goals; Luke Millwood field goal)
beat
TWEED HEADS 22 (Tim Maccan, Selasi Berdie, Damien Moar, Cory Bond tries; Brad Davis 3 goals)
