Super League - Review

Hull moved up to third place in Super League by thrashing Wakefield 44-4, full back Steve Prescott grabbing two tries in his 20-point haul.

Shaun McRae's side scored eight tries as they far too strong for the second-bottom Wildcats at the Kingston Communications Stadium, Prescott leading the rout with two tries and six goals.

Winger Gareth Raynor celebrated his return from rugby union with a try whilst brothers Richard and Graeme Horne, Ewan Dowes, Colin Best and Sean Ryan also touched down.

Hull took control of the game early on and winger Raynor almost made a dream start with a try after just three minutes.

Raynor, who rejoined the club only the day before after an unsuccessful season with Leicester Tigers, almost found a way over after good work by Richard Horne and Craig Greenhill but was crowded out.

The home side did not have long to wait for the opening score however as Richard Horne floated over a long pass for Peter Lupton, the debutant on loan from Leeds, to cleverly send Prescott in.

Richard Horne was then the creator and finisher as he took a smart return pass from Colin Best to race behind the posts for Hull's second after 11 minutes.

The Hull momentum was briefly interrupted midway through the first half as Wakefield steeled themselves to prevent a cakewalk.

Their determination paid dividends as Ben Jeffries surprised the home defence by putting Jamie Field through a gap to score - but normal service was soon resumed.

Two tries in three minutes just before the interval put paid to the Wildcats' revival.

First Richard Fletcher broke the line for Prescott to grab his second and then Raynor got his comeback score from a Kirk Yeaman pass.

The try of the night followed seven minutes into the second half as a quick break allowed Paul Cooke and the strong-running Adam Maher combined to give Ewan Dowes a run at the line. Dowes, another Leeds loanee, made no mistake as he stretched to plant the ball over the line for another four points.

The Wildcats showed they had some spirit as Richard Newlove and then Jeffries went close to grabbing consolations but the difference in class was obvious.

Best found another crack in the Wildcats' defence to claim an easy try in the corner and Sean Ryan ensured Hull finished with a flourish by barging his way over for his side's seventh try of the night.

Prescott, who now links up with the Lancashire squad for next week's Origin Game, was taken off after 61 minutes but with six goals he had already played his part in a convincing win.

Graeme Horne applied the finishing touch with a breakaway try in the last minute. Hull Tries: Best, R Horne, Raynor, Ryan, Prescott 2, Dowes, G Horne Goals: Prescott 6

Wakefield Tries: Field
