Tetley's Challenge Cup Round 5 Review

This weekend was Round 5 of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup as Wembley got a bit nearer for some.

On Friday night Hull FC saw off Wakefield Wildcats 24-6; Gareth Ellis was back to his best as he scored his first try for the Black and Whites. Kirk Yeaman also got on the scoresheet as Hull eased into the Quarter Finals.

In the capital London Broncos saw off Bradford Bulls 25-16 at the Stoop. Michael Witt pulled all the strings for the Broncos, the half back kicked four goals a drop goal and also scored a try in a good win for the Londoners.

On Saturday we saw the tie of the round as Huddersfield Giants put Leeds Rhinos out of the competition with a good 24-8 win. The Giants led 16-4 at the break with tries from Shaun Lunt, Leroy Cudjoe and Joe Wardle. Kallum Watkins responded for the Rhinos. However, Despite Wardle been sent-off for punching on 61 minutes, Huddersfield’ tremendous defence kept Leeds out and Cudjoe booked a quarter final place with a try in the last minutes as the Super League Champions missed out on a fourth successive visit to Wembley.

Elsewhere, holders Warrington hammered Salford City Reds 52-6 which saw the return of veteran Stand off Lee Briers. Wigan also had a big win 46-14 at Hull KR. Sam Tomkins helped himself to four as the Warriors came from behind to win.

Catalan Dragons demolished York City Knights 92-8 in Perpignan. York took the lead with a Tom Carr penalty but this was short lived as Kevin Larroyer scored four and Morgan Escare got a hat-trick in a record win for the French outfit.

Widnes Vikings eased past Workington Town 36-0 and the final team in the last eight were Sheffield Eagles who defeated fellow Championship rivals Halifax 28-12.
