Thaiday &
Quigley injured, Scott retires

Newcastle has suffered a blow to its NRL campaign with livewire fullback Milton Thaiday expected to spend up to six weeks on the sidelines nursing an ankle injury.

Knights doctor Neil Haplin has confirmed the 26-year-old suffered significant ligament damage to his ankle in yesterday's win over South Sydney, but does not believe the injury will require surgery. Thaiday will see a surgeon tomorrow.

Meanwhile, back-up hooker Luke Quigley has undergone surgery for a broken jaw following an incident at a Newcastle Hotel last Friday. The club has issued a statement saying security tape shows Quigley being attacked from behind by two men in the car park of the Beaumont St Hotel about 2.30am.

Quigley is expected to be sidelined for six weeks and is considering pressing charges if his assailants are identified.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Storm front-rower Dennis Scott has announced his retirement from the NRL after a long and frustrating battle with injury. Scott joined Melbourne last season after stints with the Brisbane Broncos and the Bulldogs and played 19 matches for the Storm in 2005.

After sustaining knee and shoulder injuries last season, Scott was laid low by a neck problem early this year. He returned to play the last four matches for the Storm's Queensland Cup feeder team Brisbane Norths before deciding he'd had enough.
