The Cowboys win in golden point
time

The North Queensland Cowboys have defeated the Newcastle Knights 28-24 in a golden point game at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The first Try came in the 18th minute and it was to the Cowboys, through Steven Southern, and Josh Hannay converted and the Cowboys took the lead 6-0.

The next try came six minutes later, but this time it was to the Knights with Mark Hughes going into score, Kurt Gidley converted and it was 6-6.

The Knights then hit the lead nine minutes before halftime through Matthew Gidley, and after his brother converted it was 12-6 to the Knights.

Four minutes before halftime, Knights second-rower Clint Newtown was sent to the sin-bin after stripping the ball off a Cowboys player, close to the line.

That didn't stop the Knights though as their winger Anthony Quinn scored out-wide, Gidley converted and as the teams went up the tunnel it was 18-6 to the Knights.

The Cowboys scored first in the second half, after Ty Williams went in to score but Josh Hannay couldn't convert and it remained the Knights 18-10.

The Cowboys scored again shortly afterwards through Travis Norton, and when Josh Hannay converted, it was a two-point ball game 18-16.

The Cowboys hit the lead after David Myles streaked away down field and then Hannay converted it was 22-18 the Cowboys leading.

The next try was a funny one after there was a grubber kick put through by a Knights player, Ty Williams knocked it on, then kicked it forward it then came off a Knights players knee a Kurt Gidley picked up and scored, he also converted and it was 24-22 to the Knights.

With six minutes remaining the Cowboys got a penalty right in front and Josh Hannay evened things up at 24-24.

Josh Hannay then had an attempt at field goal from about 40 meters out and it hit the cross bar and back into the field of play.

The Knights then had a perfect chance to get a field goal just before full-time when Ben Kennedy passed the ball when the ref had called held, and so we went into Golden Point.

Both teams had some chances in the first half of Golden Point, with the best coming just before halftime in golden point as Kurt Gidley put in a chip kick, it was charged down, Luke O'Donnell ran down field and got tackled two out from the Knights line and so it was halftime in extra-time.

Didn't take long for the game to be the Cowboys though, after the Cowboys kicked off and Ben Kennedy lost the ball, it went onto Travis Norton who scored the match winning try to give the Cowboys a 28-24 win.

Both teams had a chance to win the game, but the Cowboys got there in the end.
