THE GOLD COAST TITANS HAVE
ARRIVED!

One of rugby League's biggest questions has been answered tonight (Thursday, 22/09/05) with the Gold Coast launching their new name, the Gold Coast Titans, at Robina Town Centre in Queensland.

The Titans was the preferred emblem, edging out the Stingers and the Pirates. The colours will most likely be blue, gold and white.

Fans witnessed a slick launch attended by a number of officials including Titans Managing Director Michael Searle and National Rugby League CEO David Gallop.

"It's a winner and so is the process we used to get us this result." said Searle.

"It has been arguably the most exhaustive and transparent naming process in the history of Australian sport."

David Gallop said, "It's an important milestone for the Gold Coast and I'm sure that the Titans name will become a catch-cry for thousands of fans."

'TITANS' was the overwhelming winner being the most popular name chosen from a poll conducted on the NRL website in early August. Following a process which began in June, fans were asked to choose from a short list of three 'finalists'. Out of 49,224 votes cast, 'TITANS' polled 45%, ahead of 'PIRATES' 29% and 'STINGERS' at 26%.

The Titans name is inspired by the giant gladiator from Greek Mythology and in modern usage the name Titan conjures up imagery of prodigious size and strength.

The evening also saw the launch of the new Gold Coast website at www.titans.com.au where fans are being asked to contribute in the process of choosing the team jersey.

Last May, the Gold Coast were successful in their bid to join the NRL competition for the 2007 season. They have since recruited a number of players including Panthers' five eighth Preston Campbell and Dragons' front rower Luke Bailey.

The decision to include the Gold Coast as the 16th NRL team ends six years of perseverance since the Gold Coast were omitted from the NRL in 1998.
