Tweed Heads in
entertaining win against Ipswich

IPSWICH JETS v TWEED HEADS SEAGULLS

It wasn?t quite Revenge of the Sith, but Luke ?Sky? Walker all but wreaked havoc upon Tweed Heads as his Ipswich Jets fell just short of the Seagulls, 24-22 at QLD Group Stadium on Saturday.

With in excess of 8000 fans packed in to watch the Legends of League match, the Wizard Cup combatants provided a highly entertaining undercard which threatened to steal the show.

After falling behind 10-0 early, Tweed climbed back to be in front 14-10 at halftime. The visitors then built a 24-16 advantage, with a noticeable lift in defensive intensity after the break.

Ipswich winger Walker was working to a different script however and helped construct a gripping finale.

After first scoring a try of his own, he set up a thrilling finish with a 90m kick return that allowed Ricky Bird to cross two plays later.

The final 10 minutes was a war of attrition. Amid the physical battle, Tweed coach Steve Murphy prayed a penalty goal would not consign his team to its fourth draw in just nine games.

?As it is we now have three wins, three losses, three draws and a points differential of two,? Murphy said.

?We?re entertaining if nothing else. You get your money?s worth from us.?

Countering Tweed?s relief at keeping in touch with the top five, the southerners suffered injuries to hooker Matt King (ankle), his back-up Cory Bond (hip) and forward Jeff Moate (shoulder).

Captain Andrew Moroney again pushed his claims for Country selection, while David Strachan, Ryan O?Connell, Ben Hill and Josh Vaughan also shone for the victors.

Tweed is set to face Wynnum next Sunday at the Piggabeen Complex in the ?Battle of the Seagulls?, while Ipswich hosts Central at QLD Group Stadium on Saturday night.
