Wolves confirm Johns approach

Warrington Wolves look to have pulled off a major coup with the capture of former Australia captain Andrew Johns on a short-term deal.

The club have confirmed they have made an approach to the 31-year-old Newcastle Knights half-back to join them at the end of the regular season in the National Rugby League. The Knights will not qualify for the play-offs.

A club statement read: ?Warrington Wolves have confirmed reports that they are the club that have made an approach to the Australian and Newcastle Knights halfback Andrew Johns, 31, with regards to an offer of an opportunity of a short-term contract until the end of the current engage Super League season.

?The club will look to hold a press conference on Wednesday to confirm, until then there will be no further comment.?

Johns, who has pledged his future to the Knights for two more years, has only just returned to full fitness after two years of injury problems which forced him to sit out last year?s Gillette Tri-Nations Series.

He spent several months on the sidelines after damaging his knee and neck in separate incidents before breaking his jaw earlier this year.

But, despite the lack of match action, he returned to inspire New South Wales to a 2-1 victory over Queensland in this year?s State of Origin Series and has played a key role in the Knights? late-season revival.

Twice voted the world?s best player, he looks set to follow in the footsteps of another Australian half-back legend, Allan Langer, who made 47 appearances for Warrington from 2000-01.
