A town called Tingha

TINGHA has a population of just 850 people. Nestled 25 kilometres from Inverell and 689 kilometres from Sydney, Tingha is remote enough. A trip to the beach means an all day drive just to get there. Tingha may be small but they have a Rugby League field and in recent times, have produced some great players including Preston ?Presto? Campbell and Owen ?Owie? Craigie.

Going Home

IT can take me an eternity to decide what to wear to a game of football. So many factors. Is it a traditional rival, or one of those new fangled out-of-town teams? Is it pre season, which means donning last years Charity Shield jersey, or is it Anzac Day and time for the commemorative St George ?Red V with the Gun Barrel Green??

Still hate the Roosters! You know we still hate the Roosters?

NO, no, I?m not about to start another piece about how much the Burrow owns other supporter groups ? I have however quoted the South Sydney chant to as an insight into the mentality which opposition fans have adopted towards the Roosters over recent years.

A little R E S P E C T

IT is practically impossible to read, watch or listen to the news without hearing something about the North Queensland Cowboys and their sudden rise to be one of the top teams in the NRL. Clich?s and catchphrases like ?feel good story of the year? and ?surprise packet? have been dusted off and brought out.

Great Britain?s Tri-Nations Chances

AMONGST British Rugby League?s so-called media experts there seems to be a widely accepted view that, in last years? Ashes series, Great Britain showed that they were closing the gap with Australia and have a real chance of beating the Old Enemy in the forthcoming tri-nations tournament. That?s very reassuring to those of us fans who, ignorant of the finer points of RL, thought we had been walloped 3-0 by a third choice Aussie team brilliantly led by an hitherto little regarded one-legged cripple called Kimmorley. In just over six weeks the tri-nations competition gets underway. With the GB squad due to be announced in a few weeks, this post examines GB?s prospects for that series, asking: can we expect more of the same or are there any realistic reasons for optimism that GB might win or at least at least avoid another whitewash?

NRL 2004 SEASON REVIEWS ? Canberra Raiders

THE fact that the Raiders qualified for the finals for the third consecutive season shouldn?t disguise the reality that season 2004 was a failure for the ?Green Machine?.

NRL 2004 SEASON REVIEWS ? St.George-Illawarra Dragons

ST.GEORGE-ILLAWARRA are still awaiting serious results to emerge from serious promise. In 2004, the Dragons showed signs of transferring their tag as one of the best teams on paper to a being good team where it matters on the field. But the underlying problem of consistency and the necessary luck with injuries still evades the joint venture club.

Irish unveil European Nations squad

IRELAND have revealed their squad for the forthcoming Rugby League European Nations Cup and the 20 man squad will include four players from the domestic Rugby League Ireland competition. The squad includes eight players with Super League experience and ten players from last season's squad in the inaugural competition. Barrie McDermott is unavailable to play in this Sunday's opening fixture against Wales at Aberavon because of club commitments with Leeds Rhinos whilst Francis Cummins, Dean Gaskell, Terry O'Connor, James King, Tim Jonkers and Paul Handforth have all been ruled out through injury. Commenting on the squad Head Coach Daryl Powell said, "It is unfortunate for the players who have missed out but we are confident with the players that we have that we can build on last season's effort and have a real attempt to reach the Final this season. "It is important for the development of the game in Ireland that we have the players from the amateur side included and they will benefit from their involvement with us. They are making great strides in Ireland, including a first ever win over England this season, and these players can now take the step up to the next level." Ireland begin their campaign this Sunday 17th October against Wales in Aberavon (kick-off 2.30pm) before taking on Scotland in Navan on Friday 29th October. The squad in full is:
