Sydney Airport Jets news release

THE NSWRL Premier League 2003 top points-scorers and top try-scorers lists provide clear evidence of the tremendous seasons enjoyed by both Troy Barnes and Alf Duncan. Troy, who played in both the five-eighth and lock positions, scored nine tries and kicked sixty-four goals for a total of 164 points for the season. This placed him sixth on the Premier League points-scorers table, a very commendable effort indeed. Henson Park regulars would no doubt remember Barnesey's four tries scored against hot-shots Parramatta in Round 19, and his remarkable sixty-metres charge down try against the Bulldogs in front of that huge Reunion Day crowd. Troy kicked his share of goals from the sideline this year as well. The former Rabbitoh has given splendid service in his two years at Henson Park, and he was the winner of the Fred Daly Memorial award for meritorious service by a player last year. Popular wingman and former Sea Eagle Alf Duncan finished the competition rounds with 19 tries and in sixth position on the competition try-scorers' table - all the more remarkable given that he missed six matches with a knee injury (which also cost him certain selection in the NSW Residents representative team). Who will ever forget that mesmerising try he scored against Parramatta in the fifth round match at Henson Park? As it was described in the match report: "In-form Sydney Airport Jets winger Alf Duncan scored a magnificent sixty-metres try seven minutes prior to the break, with an exhilarating surge up the eastern left-hand touchline that demonstrated speed, athleticism, strength and determination as he fended off one blue and gold defender after another." By season's end Alf was clearly the form winger of this high standard competition, and arguably one of the best wingers ever to wear the famed colours of Australia's first and oldest Rugby League club. Well done, Troy and Alf. The entire Newtown club and the Rugby League community salute both of you on your accomplishments!

Officials left out in the cold - Editorial

THE sporting fraternity are currently in their busiest stage of the year, with some sports drawing to a close until next season, and many other sports preparing to commence for the summer. In the midst of all the commotion about how sides are going, and how sides went, spare a thought for the umpires and referees across all sports who battle hard each year for the respect they deserve. Whilst the sports themselves are more important than any one individual, one questions whether the players, spectators and governing bodies realise the seriousness of the current situation surrounding umpires and referees.
