State of Origin III Preview

THE third and final instalment of this year's State of Origin Series is looming large on the horizon of Rugby League's finest arena. The script couldn't have been written better with a 1-game-all deadlock, including a tight first encounter, followed by an open and free-flowing return clash that saw the return of favourite son Brad Fittler in the sky blue.

Climb Every Mountain

IN case I'm dealing with entertainment gurus here I should probably clarify that no, I am not quoting the Reverend Mother from the 1965 theatrical hit 'The Sound of Music', or the latest Guy Sebastian rendition of the classic for that matter. For the rest of you Rugby League fans, it might also serve me well to inform you that no, I'm not talking about the treacherous journey to the Penrith Football Stadium either, although we could certainly make a case for the latter. What I'm referencing here is what really makes great football well, great! A wise man once said:

We Can Be Heroes

A fact a lot of us forget in our day, is that anyone of us can be a hero. In rugby league this is associated with an inspirational performance by a first grader, well I don?t believe the club to be so exclusive.

City v Country a great tradition - but does it mean much anymore?

COUNTRY teams used to look forward to the battle with the boys from the City! Now days, in my opinion, it doesn?t mean much to them as much as it did before. Many footballers from the bush used to fight for positions in the two teams that were picked. These games then exposed them to the selectors and to be considered for further representative honours. Sure, the games were sometimes uneven as the Country players used to lack the fitness and skill levels of the city teams. However, we shouldn?t lose sight of some of the players that were discovered in these games and then bought by City Clubs.

Cents looking to bounce back after Buffalo blow

AN understrength Centurions side went down to a surprise 24-16 defeat at Bramley on Saturday. Missing ten first team squad members, Peter Tonkin was forced to play several players out of position and give call-ups to a clutch of second teamers, one of whom, Luke Baxter got a try. The others were both scored by Matt Thomas with emergency stand-off Aaron Kwong kicking two goals.

The Freak Show: The End of an Era

I may be jumping the gun here, but nevertheless I?m here to make a very big call. Last Sunday, amidst the swirling dust of Energy Australia Stadium we witnessed something great, and I?m not just referring to the final score. What we witnessed was a happening. An epiphany if you will. A moment in time that we?ll look back on in years to come and regard as a turning point. What we witnessed, was the end of the David Peachey Era.
