South London Storm new head coach

SOUTH London Broncos believe they have one of the best young coaches in the game in new Head Coach Rob Powell who has replaced Darryl Pitt as Head Coach. Rob, who hails from Sheffield studied at Newcastle History and Northumbria Universities where he completed his MSc in Sports Management including a MSc dissertation on Coaching. Whilst studying Rob coached the succesful Newcastle University team that made the 2002 BUSA final and included current National League star Andy Raleigh. Rob was recently employed locally as the first ever Full Time Rugby League Community Sports Coach, a scheme funded by the club itself and the DCMS. This role has helped see the start up of clubs such as the Brixton Bulls and the Thornton Heath Tornadoes. Storm Chairman Paul Brown was delighted with the appointment, "Rob is one of the best young coaches in the game, we are fortunate to have him on board. He takes his coaching very seriously and is a serious student of the game. He also has the respect of our players from his work as assistant to Darryl last year and also for his work with the local juniors." Brown was also full of praise for the clubs Head Coach for the last 2 years Darryl Pitt, "Darryl has been a great servent for the club and his knowledge of the game has been invaluable to the club and to Rob. We would like to thank him for his efforts over the last 2 years and we are delighted that he will be staying involved with the club in other capacities." The club has confirmed reports that they still intend to add to the coaching structure at the club with a couple of internal appointments likely to be made over the next few weeks. Rhinos get serious in preparation for World Club Challenge

LEEDS Rhinos build up to the Carnegie World Club Challenge will include spending time with Rugby Union World Champions England. England RU head coach Andy Robinson told the England squad this week about his plans for them to train with Leeds Rhinos, the Rugby League Super League champions, next month. He is planning his cross code initiative with the Rhinos head coach, Tony Smith. Both codes hope to benefit from each others? tactics and skills. Robinson met with Smith last week in Leeds, to fine tune their plans for the three day training session set for mid January. The idea was hatched by England much earlier this year and is seen as one of several lateral steps planned for 2005. The head coach anticipates England will greatly benefit from the trip north.
