PENRITH will enter the 2005 season with a quiet confidence after two consecutive years in which the club has enjoyed sustained success. After their rapid rise from also rans to NRL premiers in 2003, the Panthers were always going to struggle a little as defending premiers in 2004. Injuries to key players and the unfamiliar distraction of representative commitments contributed to some erratic form but the mountain men were still good enough to finish in the top four. The nine match suspension of interchange prop Ben Ross and injury to centre Luke Lewis were telling when they were beaten by the Bulldogs 30-14 in the 1st Preliminary Final at Aussie Stadium.

THE New Zealand Sevens team performed extremely well, enduring very toughcompetition in hot conditions at the VB Sevens which was run by St Marys Leagues on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 February 2005 at the Western Weekender Sports Stadium in Sydney. The NZ Residents defeated by the hosts in the final by 22-8.
THE Sydney Airport Jets, reinforced by nine Cronulla-Sutherland players as part of the two clubs? 2005 partnership deal, finished too strongly for North Sydney in Saturday?s VB Premier League trial match at Henson Park. Newtown won 28-4, with several of the Sharks contingent among the stand-out performers. The match also doubled as the first leg of the annual three-game Frank Hyde Shield series between the two 1908 foundation Rugby League clubs.
