Wests Tigers delivered a statement performance at a sun‑drenched Leichhardt Oval, overwhelming the North Queensland Cowboys 44-16 in front of a vibrant crowd of 17,637.
From the opening exchanges the Tigers played with speed, intent and cohesion, and the Cowboys simply couldn't keep pace with the tempo or the pressure.
North Queensland actually struck first, Jake Clifford taking an early penalty goal after a flurry of infringements. But the tone of the afternoon shifted dramatically when repeated ruck offences saw Kai O'Donnell sent to the sin bin in the 10th minute. With the Cowboys down to 12, the Tigers pounced immediately. Samuela Fainu powered over beside the posts, Adam Doueihi converted, and the home side never looked back.
Doueihi then sliced through for a try of his own, before the Tigers' left edge took control of the contest. Kai Pearce‑Paul scored twice in the space of ten minutes, both courtesy of sharp work from Jarome Luai, who was at his creative best. Luke Laulilii finished the half with a corner try on the siren, giving the Tigers a commanding 28-2 lead at the break.
The second half began with more brilliance from Luai, who regathered his own grubber off the padding for a try that brought Leichhardt to its feet, although not after Braidon Burns had got the Cowboys on the tryscoring list. At 34-6 the match looked over, but the Cowboys briefly rallied. Jaxon Purdue finished a clever kick‑chase, and Tom Chester beat multiple defenders to score as North Queensland narrowed the margin to 34-16 with 20 minutes remaining.
Any hint of a comeback was extinguished when Laulilii intercepted a Scott Drinkwater pass and sprinted 70 metres to score, restoring the Tigers' control. Jeral Skelton then added a powerful finish in the corner, capping a strong cameo after replacing the injured Taylan May. The Tigers threatened to push for 50 in the final minutes, but handling errors from both sides ensured the score remained 44-16.
Across the park, the Tigers were faster, cleaner and more composed. Their forward pack dominated the middle, their spine played with fluency, and their defensive scramble repeatedly shut down Cowboys opportunities. North Queensland, by contrast, were plagued by errors and ill‑discipline, repeatedly killing their own momentum just as they looked to build pressure.
Next week the Wests Tigers are away to South Sydney in Gosford, while the Cowboys will be glad to head home after spending the opening fortnight on the road - they host Gold Coast in Townsville on Sunday night of Multicultural Round.
