Giants record opening round win over Vikings

Huddersfield Giants kicked off their Betfred Super League season with a 28-16 victory at Widnes Vikings.

The Giants, who endured a miserable campaign in 2016, went behind early on as Charly Runciman crossed in the fourth minute.

But Jermaine McGillvary scored twice and Lee Gaskell and Tom Symonds crossed during an 18-minute spell to give Rick Stone's side a 20-6 lead at the interval.

After Aaron Murphy crossed in the 55th minute for the visitors, Widnes threatened a comeback with tries from Stefan Marsh and Rhys Hanbury but new Giants skipper Leroy Cudjoe sealed the win two minutes from time.
