Golden boot shines in the Warriors last minute win over Sharks

Shaun Johnson scored a freakish solo try on the last play of the game to give his side a comeback 20-16 win over the Sharks in front of 13,988 fans at Remondis Stadium.

The game started off in lull with errors and penalties riddling most of the first half. The Warriors in particular had trouble with their discipline and gave away far too many cheap penalties in the opening stanza.

Yet despite this the away team was able to grab the first try of the match when Johnathon Wright crossed in the corner in the 16th minute. A set play saw Shaun Johnson go out the back to Tuimoala Lolohea, who then threw a pin point cut out pass to his winger who went over untouched.

It only took the Sharks seven minutes to respond though when Luke Lewis was the beneficiary of a freakish deflection from a Michael Ennis grubber and was able to bag a four pointer under the sticks.

The Sharks than began to get on top of the Warriors in general play but were unable to convert their superiority. This came back to haunt them when Chad Townsend threw a brilliant long ball to Manu Vatuvei in the 30th minute who than stampeded Valentine Holmes to score out wide. Shaun Johnson again missed the conversion as the Sharks kicked a late penalty goal to make it 8-8 at the break.

McFadden's' key message to his side at half time would have been to maintain your discipline, so he would have punched a hole in the wall when the Warriors gave away two penalties in the first three minutes of the second half. The Sharks were able to secure a penalty goal on the second infringement to grab the lead.

Neither team was then able to stamp their authority on the match, with the Warriors looking tired in defence but the Sharks were unable to capitalise, as their attack seemed lost at stages. Jack Bird in particular had an average night with the boot, coming up with a few horrible grubbers that released the pressure on a struggling Warriors defence.

A Johnson penalty goal in the 60th minute to square it up once more was the only scoring play until the final seven minutes, and what a last segment it was.

Firstly Johnson sparked into life by deciding to run it on the last and racing 30 metres before putting in a perfect cross field kick for Solomone Kata, who was able to ground the ball in the corner.

After the kick off the Warriors only had to hold on for five minutes, but couldn't and caved under the pressure. Andrew Fifita scored probably the greatest solo try by a prop in the history of rugby league in the 75th minute, he stepped six Warriors would be tacklers on the way to the line. Holmes then slotted the extras and the Sharks were up 16-14 with three minutes to go.

They looked like they were going to hold on for the win until Ryan Hoffman charged down a kick and ran 70 metres to give his side one last chance. Enter Shaun Johnson. The little magician received the ball on the right hand side of the field before dancing cross field whilst mesmerising Sharks defenders. He stepped past five defenders on his right foot before going off his left for the last two to score one of the most memorable match winning tries of all time. He than kicked the goal after the siren for good measure to give the visitors a 20-16 win.

Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell may be in big trouble at the judiciary though after he lifted the knee when running the ball. He badly broke Anthony Tupou's jaw in the incident and will most likely be rubbed out for a few weeks.

Next week the Warriors remain in Sydney to face the Parramatta Eels, while the Sharks will need to overcome the heartbreak when they head to Robina for a clash with the Titans - both games scheduled for next Saturday.
