Bulldogs v Storm preview

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs v Melbourne Storm
Belmore Sports Ground - Monday 7:00pm

Will The Bulldogs return to Belmore be a night to remember? Or can the Storm prove they can be a force without 'Billy The Kid'?

The Bulldogs return to Belmore for the first time since 1998 in what is their spiritual home. Despite playing home games at ANZ Stadium these days, many Canterbury have many fond memories of Belmore. The names of Mortimer, Lamb and Moore still ring in the ears, the sound of trains whizzing past in the background and of bone crunching hits out on the field. Belmore is a wonderful ground and fans are delighted to be heading out there for Monday night. A sell out crowd is expected and it is great for the game of rugby league to head back to one of the best suburban grounds in Sydney.

Canterbury knocked over Penrith last week 24-12 in a convincing win which pushed the Bulldogs into the top 8. They have found some much needed consistency of late winning 3 of their past 4 and are starting to look more like the side that we saw in 2014. Moses Mbye has added a new direction of attack to the Canterbury side and having Josh Reynolds coming off the bench has given the Dogs a great bench option and some versatility.

In changes for Canterbury they lose Josh Jackson for one match due to a dangerous throw charge, he has been replaced by young forward Shaun Lane. The big in for Canterbury is the return of Brett Morris, this sees Sam Perrett move out to the wing and Corey Thompson dropping out of the squad.

Melbourne were involved in a hell of a game last week against Brisbane at home. Despite making the Broncos make an extra 112 tackles and 11 line drop outs, the Storm somehow lost 14-12 due to a phenomenal defensive display by a brilliant Brisbane outfit. Minus Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater, the Storm lacked that polish in attack and were forced to rely on Cameron Smith to take charge when in attacking positions. There are rumors of Cronk making an early return this week which would be a huge boost for the Storm, at the moment though there have been no changes to the Storm and they will line up as last week.

They have slipped to 5th after last week's defeat and coach Craig Bellamy will want to get back into the winners circle and push for the Storm to get in to the top 4.

Last Meeting: Canterbury 28 Melbourne 4, Finals Week 1, 2014.

Canterbury shocked Melbourne down at AAMI Stadium last year in the first week of the playoffs. Including that victory the Dogs have won the past 4 in a row.

To make matters more interesting is that the last match at Belmore to date was between Canterbury and Melbourne. The match was played in pouring rain and torrential conditions and the Bulldogs triumphed 8-4.

Who To Watch: For the home side the return of Brett Morris is a huge inclusion. Morris is one of the deadliest players with the ball in hand. Canterbury fans haven't got to see that much of him in 2015 so they will be very happy to see him charging the ball back at Belmore on Monday evening. Morris is still one of the quickest players in the NRL and his support play is 2nd to none. Morris also has the ability to break tackles and set up his outside players. In only 5 games in season 2015 Morris has 3 tries, 764 metres and 7 line breaks. This shows how dangerous he can be.

If he gets just the slightest bit of room from the Melbourne defence he will cause them many issues.

For the Storm keep an eye out for QLD representative Will Chambers. Chambers has come along in leaps and bounds for the Storm in the last two seasons. So much so that he has represented QLD in state of origin on 3 occasions. He also has 59 tries in 109 games, including 43 tries in 67 games since returning to the Storm from Rugby Union. Chambers is one of the Storm's most potent attacking weapons (evident by his 7 tries, 6 line breaks, 2 try assists and 133 metres per game in 2015). It will be in the Storm's best interest if they can get the ball to Chambers a lot on Monday night and get it to him in space. If this happens then Chambers can showcase how classy he is and will cause the Bulldogs some defensive headaches.

The Favourite: The home advantage sees the Bulldogs start as favorites in this clash.

My Tip: Canterbury in this one ladies and gents. They have been in good touch in the past month and Moses Mbye and Josh Reynolds have been improving each week.

The Storm still have a great forward pack but with no Cronk or Slater I think they will struggle for points again. Should be a great game though, great for footy to be back at Belmore!
