Legends unite for Ronny Gibbs Sevens

Rugby league legends including Laurie Daley, Wendell Sailor and Nigel Plum will come together today to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Ronny Gibbs Sevens Tournament in the north-west New South Wales outback town of Bourke.

Named after a legend of league, the Ronny Gibbs Sevens attracts boys and girls rugby league and netball participants across two age divisions on one day of competition.

This year is cause for extra celebration as the Ronny Gibbs Sevens reaches its 20-year milestone. For the man himself, it's a huge honour to see sport, through his tournament, capture the hearts and minds of people in remote regional locations - and, in this special anniversary year, to see so many famous faces join him for the trip to Bourke.

"We've got some special guests coming up this year to help celebrate the 20 years with the NSW Blues coach and assistant coach, Laurie Daley and Matt Parish, along with recently retired Nigel Plum and Wendell Sailor," Gibbs said.

"It's all about rugby league and netball on the day, but it's not about that in the long run. Seeing the kids at school and rewarding the kids who are doing the right thing and staying at school and getting an education, that's what it's about and it's been going for 20 years, so we must be doing something right."
