Are the Bunnies cooked?

With the Rabbitohs being absolutely demolished on Friday night against the Broncos at Allianz to fall to their third loss in four weeks, questions must be asked about whether they can seriously pose any threat in September.

They now look unlikely to finish in the top four and will find it almost impossible to mount a premiership defence.

Jon Sutton has a suspected broken jaw and Issac Luke was placed on report for a shoulder charge.

Greg Inglis had knee surgery during the week and is surely unlikely to get up for next week's match against the Roosters, despite the Rabbitohs insisting that there is a chance he could return to the side.

With the Roosters playing some great footy in recent weeks, Souths are unlikely to be able to get a win next week, meaning they will slip out of the four. Winning the premiership from outside the top four would seem improbable at best, with the likes of Brisbane, Sydney and North Queensland in the box seat to make a run at the title with William Hill NRL betting odds.

Coach Michael Maguire admitted that if his side produces the same performance in the coming weeks, they will suffer the same fate as Friday night.

"We were poor," Maguire said after his side's 47-2 loss.

"Simple as that. Our standards dropped throughout periods of the game. We didn't show the adversity that I know was within this team. We have to turn it around.

"We've shown how we can defend. That wasn't the way South Sydney defend tonight.

"If we turn up like that and have that performance, of course that's going to happen.

"We let ourselves down. Not acceptable for this club. It's in our hands to turn it around. We got kicked tonight. We're hurting."

The Rabbitohs could drop to as low as seventh by the end of the round depending on the outcome of other results.
