Taylor stars as Titans tame Tigers

The last time the Gold Coast Titans won five successive home games was way back in 2009.

And on Saturday night they matched that record with a comfortable 30-18 victory over the Wests Tigers.

The Titans finished the 2009 season in third position and while there is still a long way to go they have shown their fans cause for optimism in 2016.

Led by inexperienced halves Tyrone Roberts and Ashley Taylor the home side fought back from 10-0 down after 17 minutes to score 30 unanswered points before two late tries put some respectability into the scoreline.

Taylor scored a try and kicked five goals from five attempts to start his 21st birthday celebrations early.

"We didn't get off to a good start, but Neil told us to hold onto the ball at halftime and it worked," Taylor told Fox Sports.

The little-known, but talented halfback said he was confident his halves combination with Roberts was getting better week by week.

"Our combination is starting to shape up well for us so it's good," he said.

"I loved it tonight; it's my 21st this week so it was good to get the win."

The Tigers started well and everything looked to be going to script following two tries in the opening 20 minutes to centre Kevin Naiqama.

Daniel Mortimer burrowed over from close range to close the margin to 10-6 at the break before it was all one-way traffic in the second stanza.

Four tries in the first 20 minutes of the second half put the Titans on the road to victory after centre Josh Hoffman started the scoring spree in the 44th minute.

Further tries to Ryan James, Taylor and Nene Macdonald ensured Gold Coast picked up their second win from three starts and consolidated their position in the top eight after three rounds.

Naiqama completed his hat-trick before former Gold Coast winger Jordan Rankin rounded out the scoring and ensured the Tigers undefeated start to the season came to a shuddering halt.

Next week, the Titans are away to Canberra on Saturday evening, while the Wests Tigers face the in-form Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium as part of an Easter Monday triple-header.
