G.I. NO! Inglis brain fade costs Rabbitohs

v BYE

A bizarre decision by Greg Inglis to snap for field goal in the final moments has cost the Rabbitohs a shot at victory, with the South Sydney side losing 8-6 to St George Illawarra in a tough slog at the SCG.

The contest started slowly with both sides trying to get used to the conditions as the rain bucketed down. The Dragons drew first blood via a penalty goal after some ill disciplined play by the Rabbits.

However Souths didn't have to wait long to get themselves on the board. In the 12th minute Sam Burgess showed why he is one of the classiest back rowers in the competition with a barnstorming run which saw him travel 35 metres and run over 3 Dragons defenders. On the following play Souths spread the ball and it was catch and pass which Saw Alex Johnston continue his freakish try scoring record.

10 minutes later the Dragons leveled proceedings up after a glut of possession. A smart Gareth Widdop chip eluded Alex Johnston and Jason Nightingale swooped in to score in his 200th game. The Rest of the first half petered out as both sides attempted to play safety first football and attacking opportunities were at a premium. the Dragons went into the sheds at half time with an 8-6 lead.

The second half continued with torrential rain as both sides attempted to take a stranglehold of the game. The Dragons continued to thump the ball through the middle via their big Forwards in Mike Cooper and Russell Packer.

Drama struck on 51 minutes when Sam Burgess took a heavy hit from countryman Mike Cooper. Medical staff stayed on the field for up to 10 minutes as they attempted to stabilize his neck. It was a horrid sight for all fans of Rugby League to see - stay tuned to LeagueUnlimited.com for updates on his condition, as well as that of Damien Cook who was removed from the contest not long after having copped an accidental knee to the head from Mitch Rein.

Defence won the contest for the Dragons - keeping the visitors out of the contest. The final chance of the contest though went to the Bunnies - and for reasons that will no doubt become evident over the coming days, Greg Inglis took clear space to mean he could shoot for field goal... which, even if successful, would've seen his team one-point losers. Social media erupted and fans at the ground left stunned.

Souths have a short turnaround to Friday afternoon footy when they host Canterbury minus several stars at ANZ Stadium, while the Dragons enjoy another 7-day turnaround before hosting Penrith in Wollongong next weekend in Easter Sunday's only contest.
