Widnes fall at Hull hurdle

A much changed Widnes Vikings side put up a brave fight against league leaders, Hull FC in the First Utility Super League Super 8s, but to no avail, as they went down 0 -38 to their treble chasing visitors.

The Vikings made a lively start and went close inside five minutes when Lloyd White intercepted for a  90 metre dart. But the Hull cover was strong enough to snuff out the Widnes attack.

It was the visitors scored first after 22 minutes when Jordan Abdull crashed over by the posts, converting his own score for a 0 - 6 lead. And Hull went 0 - 10 ahead when Fetuli Talanoa finished in the corner with a spectacular dive. The Vikings then lost Ed Chamberlain to an arm injury before Fonua sneaked over from behind the play the ball. Abdull s conversion made it  0 - 16. Widnes compounded their own misery by losing the ball 20 metres out for Talanoa to scoop up the ball and score his second. Abdull s third conversion made it 0 - 22 at the break.

The second half again started brightly for Widnes, as both Corey Thompson and Lloyd White had tries chalked off by the video referee. The Vikings' frustrations led to mistakes and penalties and Hull capitalised on their excess of possession.

And it was the visitors who showed more composure as Steve Michaels scored the first try of the half and Abdull again converted for a 0 - 28 lead. Minutes later, Abdull split the Vikings' defence with a short pass to send Dean Hadley over and his fifth conversion put Widnes 0 - 34 behind.

With ten minutes still to play, the Vikings' misery worsened as Talanoa added his third try of the game for an unconverted score. and a final score line of 0 - 38.
