Baby Broncos defeat erratic Canberra in a golden point thriller

A LATE fight back by the Canberra Raiders was not enough for the Canberra Raiders as they went down 25-24 in extra-time to an inexperienced Bronco's outfit.

The Raiders were down 24-0 with just 15 minutes to go before the Raiders scored 24 points in just nine minutes.

Despite being minus their five Origin stars the Broncos were clinical for the first three-quarters of the match before a mammoth Raider's comeback.

The Broncos were in early through Captain Alex Glenn in the 7th minute after he beat three defenders to score.

The Broncos were in again through Dale Copley in the 15th minute after capitalising on some good field position following a Raider's error.

Neither teams looked convincing the 20 minutes after the try, as both sides repeatedly dropped the ball. However points came again in the 36th minutes through a Bronco's penalty goal to give the home side a 12-point lead.

The Broncos were on the score board again only a minute later after a wonderful kick return from the kick off from David Hala. The forward set the platform for some great play out wide from the home side who scored their third try through centre Dale Copley.

The Broncos came back from the second half with the same intensity as the Raiders continued to struggle conceding some silly penalties to give their opponents good field position.

The home side scored their first try of the half in the 51st through Josh Hoffman after a lovely cut out pass from Peter Wallace who added the extras to give the Broncos a 24 point lead.

The young Bronco's side continued to dominate until the 64th minutes after Josh Papalii muscled his way over to score for the away side and kick off their fight back. Blake Ferguson added the extras.

Papalii was over again only a minute over after another strong run and the Raiders were only two converted tries behind once Ferguson added the extras.

The Raiders were in again only a few minutes later after some nice breaks down the left side and Glenn Buttriss was over.  Blake Ferguson's conversion was successful again to make it a six point ball-game with 10 minutes to go.

A good run by Shaun Fensom gave the Raiders some good field position and they were over again in 72nd minute after Jarrod Crocker A well weigh scored following a well weighted bomb from five-eight Josh McCrone. Ferguson added the extras to equal the scores.

Both sides attempted some ambitious field goals in the last minutes of regular time nobody was successful.

The Broncos were given first touch of the ball in extra time but could not get into the correct field position. However were given another chance after the Raiders were also unable to score any points.

The home-side made the most of their second set making some good metres up the middle to allow Peter Wallace to kick a field goal from 30 metres out and give the Broncos a deserved victory.

The young Broncos side will not doubt be able to take a lot out this match, they were all over the Raiders for 60 minutes before taking their foot of the pedal and letting the away side back into the match.
