Cowboys win arm-wrestle in Melbourne

The Cowboys pulled off an upset against the the competition leaders, defeating the Melbourne Storm 20-16 in front of 10,688 fans at Aami Park.

In a match that went right down to the wire, Johnathan Thurston's goal kicking proved to be the difference, with the Queensland five-eighth capping off a perfect night with the boot with a penalty kick in the 77th minute to seal the win.

Boosted by the return of captain Cameron Smith, the Storm were in control early in the match before opening up the scoring through Matt Duffie in the 11th minute. Smith missed the conversion leaving the Storm lead at four.

The Cowboys hit back with a try to Kane Linnett in the 19th minute. Johnathan Thurston added the extras to give the Cowboys the lead.

With both teams playing fairly disciplined football in the back end of the half, try scoring opportunities were few and far between and the score remained unchanged going in to the break.

The sides were hard to split early in the second half with a spate of errors and penalties coming from both sides.

It was the home side who were the first to score again in the second half, with Gareth Widdop scoring courtesy of a Cooper Cronk cross-field kick in the 56th minute. Smith added the extras.

The Cowboys hit-back  in the 61st minute through Brent Tate who scored on the back of some Thurston brilliance. Thurston added the extras to reclaim the lead for the Cowboys.

Thurston was impressive again a few minutes later after finding some space down the right side before offloading to Linnett, who showed some brilliance of his own to streak away to score. Thurston added the extras.

The Storm finally hit back through Anthony Quinn in the 75th minute before Smith added the extras to make it a two-point ball game.

With five minutes left in the game, and two-points the difference the match was set up for an exciting finish. However, it was not to be after a Storm line drop out did not go 10 metres, gifting the Cowboys a penalty from right in front. Thurston took his time to add the points, leaving the Storm with less than two minutes to steal victory.

With the game all but wrapped up and the ball in hand, the Cowboys made no mistakes in the final minutes and came away with the two points.

Tonight's win sees the Cowboys right on the cusps of the top eight, they host the Tigers next week.

As for the Storm, they have now lost four out of their last five matches, they will head to Parramatta next weekend where they take on the last placed Eels.
