Grand Final wrap

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy says he is disappointed several contentious refereeing decisions went against his side in last night's 15-8 loss to Brisbane in the NRL grand final.

Bellamy didn't want to take the gloss off the Broncos' victory, but was upset with several crucial rulings from referee Paul Simpkins, particularly a non-call on an alleged obstruction play involving Clive Churchill medalist Shaun Berrigan.

The runners-up are due to arrive home in Melbourne just before 2PM.

Retiring Brisbane prop Shane Webcke has paid tribute to coach Wayne Bennett, saying the veteran mentor never compromised the welfare of his players in search of victory.

Webcke, who played his final match in last night's 15-8 NRL grand final win against Melbourne, predicts the critics will again come out for Bennett in the future, despite his peerless record.

The Broncos are scheduled to arrive home in Queensland just before 1PM, with a large contingent of fans expected to greet them at Brisbane airport.

Meanwhile, Brisbane Broncos CEO Bruno Cullen says the AFL grand final was a better spectacle than the NRL's and the rugby league decider needs to go back to Sunday afternoons.

Cullen says the Broncos - who beat Melbourne 15-8 last night - are investigating ways to convince the NRL board to bring the grand final back to the traditional timeslot.

NRL grand finals have been held on Sunday nights since 2001. Cullen described last night's event as dark and dewy and said the pre-game entertainment wasn't very good.
