Harrigan Ready To Hang Up His
Whistle

Bill Harrigan may have controlled his last game in the National Rugby League.

Harrigan who is currently touring New Zealand promoting his biography said his manager was looking at possible media opportunities in Australia, and should something promising eventuate he will seriously consider hanging up his whistle.

Speculation has it that Harrigan had been appointed to referee Australia's second Ashes test against Great Britain at Hull on November 16.Although he would not confirm it, if it is the case it will be his swansong.

Harrigan, 43, said it felt right to be thinking of retirement.

"I'll miss it but I'm completely satisfied with my career.

"I've achieved everything I wanted to, and more. If feel I've been better than ever in the last two years, and mentally and physically I could go round for two more years," he said.

"But there comes a time to move on, and I have to find a job."

Harrigan said he wasn't disappointed at not being named to referee last weekend's test between New Zealand and Australia in Auckland. He felt "excited" for Sean Hampstead.

Harrigan has had a distinguished career, which has included refereeing in a record 10 NRL grand finals, the last seven in succession, and a record 21 State of Origin games, the last 12 consecutively.

His 26 test appearances were a record. In 1989 he was the youngest to achieve it when he controlled his first NRL final, aged 29
