A kiwi league legend is not giving the kiwis much chance in next Friday's test against Australia.

Hugh McGahan says the kiwis will struggle because there is a lack depth in the backs.

Hugh says it is an embarrassment of riches in the forwards at the moment.

But he says it is frustrating New Zealand league is at a stage where they are struggling for players in the backline.

Hugh McGahan believes the battle-hardened Aussies will come through.

He has a vote of confidence for unwanted Warrior Lance Hohaia who is trying to cement a place in the squad.

McGahan says that although Hohaia is not playing at his best , the lack of depth in the backline means he must play at standoff.

He says playing someone out of position is not the answer as it will place too much pressure on Stacey Jones.

Hugh McGahan believes the only other option is Thomas Leuluai but it would be unfair to play the youngster in an international after just two first grade games.

He says you have to look at the development process when an 18-year-old with just two first grade games under his belt is in line for selection.

He says the selectors may have to bite the bullet and bring in English-based players for one-off tests.
