Injury news, Weekend wrap

Wests Tigers five-eighth Benji Marshall will see his club doctor this morning to plan surgery on his again-injured right shoulder, likely to sideline him for six months.

The specialist who performed Benji Marshall's previous two shoulder reconstructions says the star Tiger's latest injury is unlikely to be career threatening. Orthopaedic specialist Des Bokor says there are dozens of first grade footballers who have played up to 10 years after shoulder reconstructions.

Bokor says Marshall's injury is likely to be a new one, rather than the previous surgery coming undone, and that it should be fixable. A disillusioned Marshall will meet club doctor Donald Kuah today after he re-injured his right shoulder against Penrith on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Newcastle's Kurt Gidley will undergo scans on a knee injury but he's expected to miss six weeks.

Sharks five-eighth Adam Dykes, who only returned from injury at the weekend, will undergo tests for an eye injury while Melbourne duo Steve Turner and Ian Donnelly are both expected to be out for a month.

St George Illawarra's Dean Young, Penrith skipper Tony Puletua and South Sydney pair Luke MacDougall and Shane Walker are in doubt for their clubs' next matches.

Meanwhile, South Sydney's trying to come to terms with the biggest defeat in its history, a 66-0 flogging by the New Zealand Warriors. The Rabbitohs are eight points adrift at the bottom of the NRL table and coach Shaun McRae has made a public apology to fans.

Roosters coach Ricky Stuart's no happier, declaring there've been passengers in the team that's lost five straight matches - the latest 42-10 to Canberra. In yesterday's other match, Brisbane beat Manly 16-10 for its first win in 14 years at Brookvale.

Melbourne, which beat the Bulldogs on Friday, remains four points clear at the top of the table on 26 points. Brisbane, Cronulla and the Dragons are on 22, the Bulldogs 20 while the Knights, Sea Eagles and Raiders complete the top eight on 18 points.
