Counties Manukau Jetz defeated the Eastern Tornadoes, 44/14, at Ericsson Stadium in the curtain raiser to the Warriors / Wests Tigers game.
It was certainly not champagne Rugby League. Somewhat unfortunate, as this was the televised game. Whilst not sparkling, it was a very clinical effort from the Jetz.
The Tornadoes actually claimed first blood through a fine try to Second Rower, Songi Tupou, ten minutes into the game. The Jetz responded ten minutes later with a try to number 10, Graeme Konelio. Lee Tamatoa converted and the Jetz were on their way.
Two further tries to the Counties Manukau franchise through Loosie, Charlie Waide and Centre, Roman Hifo, both converted by Tamatoa, saw the half time score at 18/4.
The half had been an arm wrestle but the Jetz were always in control.
The second half saw an opening of the flood gates, despite the Tornadoes, again, claiming the first points of the half with Tone Taula grabbing a four pointer.
Roman Hifo, Leimoni Moala, Talipope Tuifeliasai, and Captain, Gavin Bailey, all crossed for the Jetz, with Tamatoa converting two.
This Tornadoes side is a real enigma. They have plenty of size and they are fit. They seem to suffer from a lack of belief in themselves. That, and a lack of a sense of purpose and direction. Too many times, players are rushing up too quickly out of the defensive line and leaving huge gaps. Fix the little things and they can positively change their season.
