KIWIS HEAD COACH APPOINTMENT

Brian McClennan has today been confirmed as the new Head Coach of the NZ Kiwis.

McClennan and former Kiwi James Leuluai worked under Daniel Anderson as Assistant Coaches prior to his departure for St Helens.

Sel Bennett who headed the three man selection panel confirmed that a difficult decision had been made somewhat easier by Leuluai?s withdrawal.

?James decided in the end that his business commitments would make it difficult to give the Kiwis job the time and focus required? says Bennett.

?We respect his decision to step aside at this stage rather than risk compromising both his livelihood and the Kiwis Tri-Nations campaign?

Despite solid bids from up-and-comer Tawera Nikau and coaching stalwart Stan Martin, McClennan?s coaching success in recent years and his development along side Anderson were key factors in his appointment.

Bennett has indicated that this early appointment is to ensure stability and continuity for the 2005 Tri-Nations with the term beyond this year to be reviewed at the end of the tournament per Anderson?s contract.

?Given our plans for a Kiwi?s Centenary Tour in 2007 and a World Cup campaign in 2008, it had always been our intention to review the role at the end of 2005 and the plan hasn?t changed? said Bennett
