Knights thrash Eels to march onto finals

The Newcastle Knights have concluded the regular season with a massive 54-6 thrashing of the hapless Parramatta Eels at Hunter Stadium in front of 23,392 fans. Danny Buderus starred as his Knights crafted tries in what as a poor defence display from the Blue and Gold.

Halves Jarrod Mullen and Tryone Roberts played a big role in victory for the Knights. Roberts crafted his own four-pointer six minutes into the contest with a hit and spin try. Newcastle went back to back minutes later as Joseph Leilua claimed the first of two tries thanks to Roberts' skilled hands. The Knights jumped to 12-0 after 9 minutes.

The flying Scottsman, James McManus had the bagpipes echoing around Hunter Stadium as he dived over the chalk, Danny Buderus provided a basketball pass over the Eels' defence. Shortly before the half time, Darius Boyd added his name to the growing try scorers list as he finished off a charging run from Dane Gagai. After forty minutes, Knights commanded a 22-0 lead.

Parramatta only managed a single four-pointer in the match and it was created at the hands of returning fullback Jarryd Hayne. Hayne danced through the Knights' defence to then chip over the top for Ken Sio who raced away. 5 minutes into the second half, Knights 22-6.

It was the end of the Eels points as the Knights went on to post a further six tries. Beau Scott had Jarrod Mullen to thank as he sailed into a yawning gap as they executed a set play. 55 minutes lapsed, Knights 28-6.

James McManus gave the bagpipes an encore performance as he joined Dave Simmons and David Williams as leading NRL try scorer on 19 for season 2013. He posted his second try of the afternoon as the Knights spread quickly to the blind-side. Inside the final quarter, Newcastle out to 34-6.

Joseph Leilua added a second try to his name as the flying scottsman broke free again to link up with his centre. Minutes later Akuila Uate captalised on his chance as he charged through a gap off a scrum win to extend the lead to 44-6.

The 'Nudie Run' is something all players fear, and Jeremy Smith avoided such embarrassment as he crawled his away over the white-line. Danny Buderus had never kicked a goal in his playing career, but this afternoon he finished his career with a 100% record.

Newcastle Knights 5-8th Jarrod Mullen sealed the victory as he linked with Tryone Roberts to post the final points of the contest. The Parramatta Eels unable to mount up in defence to stop the points raid.

Speculation continues for Eels coach, Ricky Stuart who could walk from the club as the Eels collect another wooden spoon for finishing in 16th position.

The Knights now look ahead to finals football with the proposition elimination final against either the Cronulla Sharks or Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Meanwhile for the Eels, they finish 2013 with just 5 wins to their name
