The Newtown Jets completed their 2008 trials program with a 40-24 win over Newcastle club side Central-Charlestown at the OKI Jubilee Stadium on Saturday. Newtown led 22-6 at half-time and 40-6 after 60 minutes, but turned on a lacklustre final quarter as the Central-Charlestown Butcher Boys piled on an unanswered three converted tries.

New Zealand internationals Sam Perrett and Iosia Soliola were both named to play for Newtown but Perrett delayed his comeback on the recommendation of the Sydney Roosters rehab staff. Soliola played confidently and did enough to remind the Roosters coaching staff that he is ready and available for NRL duty.

Jets coach Greg Matterson once again shuffled through a large number of players on the day and faces the enviable task of having to narrow down his full complement of fit and in-form players to the final 17 who will turn out for Newtown in the opening competition round.
