Nutley to quit Tigers

Castleford Tigers are to allow captain Danny Nutley to leave the club at the end of the season despite the player recently agreeing a new contract.

The 32-year-old Australian signed a two-year extension to Tigers contract earlier this summer but requested an early release to allow him to return home with his family for personal reasons.

The former Cronulla Sharks prop, who had a spell with Warrington from 1998-2001, has been linked with NRL club Sydney Roosters as a replacement for Warrington-bound Adrian Morley.

Nutley joined the Tigers following their promotion back to the engage Super League last year and has been one of their most influential players this season.

Nutley said: "After re-signing, the enormity of being here for another three years hit home, and after giving the matter a great deal of thought, as a family, we have decided to return home.

"It is with great regret that I have made this decision, especially after Terry (Matterson) bestowed upon me the great honour of captaining a club with such an illustrious history as the Tigers."

The Tigers are not yet clear of relegation trouble but have generally had a satisfactory first season back in engage Super League under new coach Matterson.

Matterson had started recruiting for next season by signing New Zealand international Awen Guttenbeil and Australia centre Sean Timmins but Nutley?s loss is a major blow.

Tigers chief executive Richard Wright said: "We are very sorry to be losing Danny, his contribution to the club this year has been immense.

"However as a club we understand that factors away from the playing field sometimes have to be considered and that is the case with Danny.

"It would have been wrong to tie him to his contract and although we didn?t want to lose him we wish him well for the future."
