Overnight Wrap: Costigan, Pomeroy, Souths

Former Brisbane forward Neville Costigan has agreed to a two-year deal with Canberra less than three weeks after being dumped by the Broncos.

The 21-year-old says he realises he's on his last chance and has promised to keep his nose clean at his new NRL club. Brisbane sacked Costigan earlier this month after he was charged with a mid-range drink-driving offence.

Costigan's deal, which contains an option for a third year, will be signed tomorrow.

On the judiciary front, Cronulla centre Ben Pomeroy is free to play against Canberra on Saturday after beating a grade one contrary conduct charge.

Pomeroy was found not guilty for his part in a 38th minute fight during Saturday's match against St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the coaching merry-go-round continues as Souths chief executive Shane Richardson acknowledged he has broken a promise by squeezing Shaun McRae out of the head coaching job and replacing him with Jason Taylor, saying it is in the club's best interests.

With the dumping of Ricky Stuart's from the Roosters and the re-signing of Ivan Cleary at the Warriors, Souths acted swiftly to counter any chance that Jason Taylor might move to the Bondi club.

McRae has been offered the position of football director.
