Overnight Wrap: Injuries & Suspensions

Wests Tigers veteran forward John Skandalis is adamant the joint-venture club is capable of making this year's finals series despite likely losing captain Brett Hodgson for the rest of the season.

Hodgson suffered a suspected season-ending knee injury in the Tigers' 34-6 loss to a resurgent Parramatta at Telstra Stadium. It leaves the reigning premiers struggling in 12th place, but Skandalis believes his side can still turn its season around in the final six rounds of the regular season.

Tigers prop Bryce Gibbs tore his bicep and will also be checked today to determine the full extent of the injury. The only good news for the Tigers is the likely return of centre Paul Whatuira, who has been sidelined with a hamstring problem.

The win, the Eels' fifth straight, elevated Parramatta to 10th on the ladder and just one win from eighth spot. Canberra also kept in touch with the top eight with a dominant 31-12 win over St George Illawarra at Canberra Stadium yesterday, while Manly put pressure on the top four with a dramatic 32-30 come-from-behind victory against Penrith.

Melbourne still lead the competition by six points from the Bulldogs.

Other injuries to be checked include Richard Villasanti (ribs), Shane Rigon (knee ligaments), Matt Gidley (hamstring), Milton Thaiday (ankle), Ryan Cross (shoulder), Matthew Scott (cork), Danny Galea (shoulder), Luke Lewis (knee) and Michael Monaghan (nose).

Up in FNQ, Robert Tanielu is expected to be advised to retire after a bruise to his neck caused much concern on Saturday night. He was caught awkwardly in a tackle involving Scott Minto. Team mate Johnathan Thurston looks like missing only a few weeks with a knee injury after initial fears thought he may be ruled out for the season.

Meanwhile, Adrian Morley is expected to be referred straight to the NRL judiciary today when the league's match review committee assesses the Sydney Rooster prop's kneeing incident from Saturday's loss against the Bulldogs.

Morley was sent off late in the match for kneeing Bulldogs hooker Corey Hughes, with the Great Britain international likely to receive an ungraded contrary-conduct charge. Morley, who is in his last year with the Roosters before returning to the English Super League next season with Warrington, has been suspended 10 times in his six-year NRL career.

He is the second player in three years to be sent off for kneeing following Cronulla's Greg Bird, who received a 10-week ban for his indiscretion in 2004.

Several other players could come under scrutiny from the weekend's matches, including South Sydney duo Germaine Paulson and Beau Champion for a lifting tackle on Newcastle's Matt Gidley. Finally, Kevin Kingston might find himself in a spot of bother with a lifting tackle on Melbourne?s Michael Crocker.
