Player movements: Schif, Simpson, Delaney

Canberra has offered Clinton Schifcofske a post-football career opportunity in a desperate last-ditch attempt to prevent him from leaving the club.

Schifcofske is seriously considering a move to Super 14 rugby union franchise Queensland on a three-year deal, but Raiders officials made a final pitch to him in an attempt to retain his services.

The NRL club's new sponsor, the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, is prepared to train up Schifcofske for a post-football career as an occupational health and safety officer. Raiders general manager Don Furner hopes the opportunity will be the lure which keeps the Queensland State of Origin fullback in the nation's capital.

Meanwhile, Wests Tigers are the latest club to join the race for the signature of Newcastle forward Steve Simpson.

The NSW representative is contracted to the Knights next season but has an escape clause which was activated by his involvement in last Wednesday's State of Origin encounter.

Manly is one of four other clubs interested in Simpson, while the Knights haven't given up hope of retaining him.

Elsewhere, the Gold Coast Titans are likely to know tomorrow whether Parramatta goal-kicking centre Brett Delaney will join the club on a three-year deal.

The 20-year-old Delaney visited the Gold Coast today to meet Titans officials, who have set a Friday deadline for him to reach a decision. But his manager Chris Orr says Delaney will decide his future within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Cronulla is also chasing the services of Delaney. Titans boss Michael Searle says off-contract Queensland and Bulldogs prop Nate Myles will also meet with club officials on Saturday afternoon.
