Queensland's Emerging State of
Origin Squad Named

Out of form Brisbane Broncos forward Carl Webb was today named in Queensland's Emerging State of Origin rugby league squad for 2004.

Webb was left out of the Broncos' elite squad at the conclusion of last season but Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett, who also oversees the Queensland Academy of Sport's Emerging player program, has thrown the backrower a lifeline.

Webb is one of seven players included in the squad with Origin experience with Brad Meyers, Cameron Smith, Josh Hannay, Matt Bowen, Nathan Fien and Chris Walker joining the likes of Penrith grand final heroes Rhys Wesser and Ben Ross in the 19-man line-up.

The QAS emerging player program was established in 2000 to help try to bridge the widening gap between club and representative football.

Newly appointed Maroons State of Origin coach Michael Hagan will also be involved in the program alongside Bennett and Queensland great Steve Walters.

The squad's first camp will be held in January at the QEII Sports Complex.
