at Canberra Stadium
Referees: Tony Archer

Match Summary:

A Clinton Schifcofske penalty goal three minutes into extra time has given the Canberra Raiders an exciting 20-18 extra time win over the Wests Tigers in Canberra today.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the 8th minute with a try to centre Dean Collis following a tidy Scott Prince kick. The Raiders then spent some time gifting the Tigers possession with a number of errors coming out of danger, and this led to the Tigers second try when Brett Hodgson got the ball one pass off the scrum and went through the defence after Lincoln Withers slipped over. His conversion gave the Tigers a 12-0 lead after 15 minutes.

The Raiders scored their first try after 20 minutes with Marshall Chalk bobbling a cross field kick before dotting down. The Radiers levelled the match nine minutes later with a Phil Graham try. Schifcofske just missed a 50 metre field goal attempt on the siren before half time.

The Raiders took the lead seven minutes into the second half when Jason Smith put Todd Carney in with a great flick pass. The Raiders then looked to be shutting the game down and were preparing to grind out a win. With 16 minutes to go Schifcofske missed a long range penalty goal that would have put the Raiders out by eight.

With 14 miuntes to go Shannon McDonnell scored off a deflected Scott Prince grubber, and the match was tied at 18-all. There were three attempted field goals in the last five minutes, the Tigers missed two and the Raiders one, including Scott Prince missing one right on the siren.

The Tigers got possession in extra time after a Raiders error and had a perfect chance to take the win, but Hodgson put the field goal attempt wide. The Raiders got the ball back and set off downfield, before Todd Payten was penalised for stripping the ball. Schifcofske landed the penalty goal from 35 metres out and claimed the win and the vital two points for the Raiders.
