Redcliffe Dolphins News

Last Saturday saw the Dolphins leave Kougari Oval having secured victories over Wynnum in three Grades.

Colts kick-off was postponed until after the QLD Cup fixture to ensure the ground presentation was up to scratch for TV broadcast after a week of rain. The change had little effect on the Dolphins running out winners 42-28 in failing light. It was a great result for the side considering they were without linchpin Wayne Bond who was called up for Premier Grade duties, Jack Reis and Sam Maniat who were also made unavailable. Matt Gillett put in another dominant display finding the try line on three occasions for the third time this season and continues to prove a handful for opposition?s, he gets the $40 LEADING EDGE Man of the Match voucher for his troubles. Dom Fallini and Daniel Bennett also deserve a wrap for their input. Mention should also be made of Ryan Corrie, Anthony Tonkin and Angus Smith who stepped up from 18?s and handled themselves admirably.

The A Grade outfit frog hopped the Seagulls on the ladder with a gutsy 22-18 win after trailing 12-10 at the break. The Dolphins toiled hard into a strong breeze in the first half and were good enough to cross for a try in the final minute to close the gap to 2 points and gain some confidence for the second stanza. The second half saw the Dolphins put in a wholehearted effort to outscore Wynnum and hang on for a solid win in a game that went right down to the final hooter. Halfback Matt Anderton picks up the HOGS BREATH CAFE Man of the Match Award for being his side?s best and found support from the likes of Chris Fox and Chris ?The Sponge? Jelich.

The Premier Grade?s forceful display in overcoming Wynnum 38-16 should give the side some momentum for the coming weeks. In what was a crucial game for both clubs the Dolphins stood up to be counted with a rugged display that should be regarded with some significants considering the side were without Captain Shane Perry, 5/8 Jamie Russo and fullback Ryan Cullen who were all on Residents duty. In a no holes barred and sometimes spiteful encounter the Dolphins were the first to concede points however were never headed after the 20th minute and in the end ran out comfortable winners picking up the Herald Bayside Cup along the way. Danny Burke was tremendous in the forward exchanges receiving the SEARLES GARDEN PRODUCTS Player of the Match Award while Colt Wayne Bond excelled in his debut earning the respect of his team mates along the way picking up the KEYSTAR AUTOWORLD Players Player Award. Mick Roberts and Liam Georgetown were also instrumental in the victory.

This week sees the Premier Grade confront second placed North Queensland Young Guns in the televised match of the round. The Dolphins will be keen to avenge a heavy first round defeat at the hands of the northerners in what shapes as a good quality contest. In the lower grades Tugun travel to Dolphin Oval for the first time and our Colts and A Grade sides will be looking to make the newcomers maiden trek over the Hornibrook as forgettable as possible.
