Well it?s all over for another year and it finished with a heartbreaking last minute loss to Burleigh with a try by of all people the ?Jive Bunny? Trent Leis in the shadows of the fulltime hooter. I was talking to Peter Leis before the game and he was looking for a place to hide he obviously wanted Burleigh and Trent to do well but he still has a special connection with the Dolphins.
The finish painfully reminded me of some other heartbreaking losses over the years a couple I was involved with. I will post a warning now the next few lines will revive painful memories.
2001 Queensland Cup Grand Final at Dolphin Oval Casey McGuire scores with a minute to go next to the posts to sink the Dolphins.
1996 Queensland Cup Grand Final at Lang Park Kyle Warren came from nowhere to drag ME down a centimetre from the try line even Gerry Collins calling the game on ABC TV thought I would score but my little legs just wouldn?t take me any faster.
1981 BRL First Grade Grand Final Chris Phelan for the first and last time in his career passes a ball to an unmarked Mick Reardon who scores in the corner despite attempts by Bunny Pearce and Louta Atoi to get to him in time.
It seems we have a challenger for Professor Shannon Fish?s title as the club?s geography master. A month or so back a Fijian junior side was playing at Dolphin Oval and the Queensland Cup side was getting ready for training in the sheds when Redcliffe High school teacher Michael Roberts popped up with this beauty ?Where are this Fijian side from? well Mick I?m no expert but I?d guess they are from Fiji.
As summer comes the boys are taking a well earned break getting ready for trainer Sergeant Major Tony Guilfoyles? cruel and unusual punishment he has lined up for pre season training which will probably start late October or early November.
This time last year the club made the tough decision to go in a new direction and appointed Anthony Griffin as the Head Coach and he?s done a good job getting the side to within 4 minutes of the grand final. He?ll be the first to admit he didn?t do it alone trainer Tony Guilfoyle, Lower Grade Coaches Ian Graham and Craig Ingebrigtsen done a great job also getting their sides into the semi finals. They are the names most fans would know but there are also a few others who need mentioning Gary O?Brien was Anthony?s assistant with the Qld Cup side, Mick Neiland our co-ordinator also done a great job as well as the all the coloured shirt brigade of trainers Foo, Jeremy, Silent, Eddie, Casa and Danny the club wouldn?t work without you blokes. The back room medical staff of Doc Peter Hackney, Physio?s Steve Falconer and James Handyside and masseuse Lynnete has done an awesome job getting the boys on the park each week.
Here are the Robbo?s for this year
Queensland Cup Player of the Year Danny Burke
A Grade Player of the Year Chris Fox
Colts Player of the Year Mick Pares
One thing is for sure I?ve just put a mocker on these guys so they are no chance of winning awards announced Sept 30 at the presentation.

Until next month
