Sea Eagles fly despite injuries

The Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles have given the 14,191 fans at Brookvale Oval a wonderful display of points with a 42-20 victory over the Newcastle Knights. However, the victory was at a cost as Manly played with 13 men in the second forty minutes.

The record stands that if both Stewart brothers (Brett and Glenn) score in a match, Manly are let to concede a loss. Once again, this statistic rings true.

It was a quick start for Manly as co-captain Jamie Lyon was sent through a gap in the Knights defence courtesy of a Glenn Stewart pass. He converted his own try to make it 6-0 after three minutes.

The Stewart brothers on show early as Brett provided the foundation for brother Glenn to power through the defenders to post Manly's second four-pointer. After five minutes, Manly ahead 12-0.

The Knights didn't have a set until the 9th minute of match but it quickly ended with a mistake. However, minutes later with some possession in their favour Akuila Uate crashed over in the corner for the first and only Knights' try of the half. Manly lead 12-4 after 13 minutes.

Tony Williams displayed his talents as he managed to fend off two Knights defenders to break away and score the first of his double. Lyon failed to extend the lead as his conversion met the uprights. Manly ahead 16-4 after 16 minutes.

A darting run from Jamie Buhrer saw him isolate a napping Kade Snowden to get his side on a roll to the line. Manly with a few quick passes saw Daly Cherry-Evans find the Steeden and link with half pairing Kieran Foran. Manly commanding a 22-4 lead with 18 minutes until half time.

Manly continued their dominate points roll with a further three tries scored in the remaining 14 minutes of the first half.

Tony Williams was on the mark to claim his second try of the afternoon as Foran kicked for the in goal area to set up his second rower. Lyon was successful with the conversion to extend the lead to 24 points, 28-4.

Man of the match Brett Stewart was gifted a try back by his brother Glenn has he supplied a quick pass to send Brett into space for Manly's fifth try of the match. The Stewart brothers display giving the home fans something to cheer about after a wonderful set piece.

The final points of the half were post by the man they call the snake as he slipped through defenders off a Tony Williams offload. Brett claimed his second of the match to continue his wonderful record at Brookvale, 64 tries from 68 games.

After a massive points total almost in line with the clock, Manly held a 38-4 lead at half time.

The Newcastle Knights found some form early second half as Manly had lost a number of key players to injury. David Williams, Jason King, Matt Ballin and Jamie Buhrer all had unavailable for the second forty minutes.

The fast flying Fijian Kevin Naiqama bolted down the left touchline to show off his speed with a 50 metre race away try for the Knights. Roberts with the conversion attempted closed the gap to 28 points, 38-10.

Manly failed to defend the next set from the kick restart as Jarrod Mullen strolled through the Manly defence to post the Knights second try in as many minutes. The Knights fans' hope grew as the score read 38-16 with 27 minutes to play.

Kevin Naiqama made the Brookvale Oval crowd nervous with 15 minutes on the clock as he raced in for his second try thanks to a Willie Mason offload. Roberts failed to convert however, score remained 38-20.

With hope in the tank, the Knights could only dream of a comeback with Manly fighting with only 13 players. Manly battled on for the final 15 minutes which saw Jorge Taufua sealed the victory with a late try. Jamie Lyon needed to successful kick the conversion for Manly to leap-frog the Rabbitohs into third on the NRL ladder, but his kick was waived away.

In the final moments of the game, Cherry-Evans attempted to ice the cake with a field goal from 35 metres out, but it faded away. The Sea Eagles flew high with a 42-20 win over the Knights.

It was a must win game for the Novocastrians as a victory today would of seen them climb into the NRL top 8 ahead of Wests Tigers. Sadly for the Knights it wasn't to be. But, the turn their attention to next week with a massive game against the Cowboys. Meanwhile Manly will host the Brisbane Broncos on Friday Night.
