Sharks and Roosters battle for golden point draw

The Cronulla Sharks have failed to break the deadlock with the Sydney Roosters, resulting in a 14-all draw at Toyota Stadium in from of 13,139.

The Roosters fired quickly as Shaun Kenny-Dowall slipped through the defensive line to open up his side's account. Daniel Mortimer took goalkicking duties in place of Braith Anasta, and he failed to convert. Roosters led 4-0 after 6 minutes.
Todd Carney put the Sharks in a great attacking position with a pin-point 40/20 kick. It didn't take long for Ricky Leutele to score through a defensive hole after he received a no-look pass from captain Wade Graham. Carney failed to convert. The game was locked at 4-all after 12 minutes.
The completion rate has hindered the Roosters chances at victory all season, and tonight it continued. The Sharks took the lead with 10 minutes before half time. Ben Pomeroy took a dart from acting half to beat the poor defence with a dive-over four-pointer. Carney was unsuccessful with the conversion - the Sharks leading 8-4. On the stroke of half time, Carney opted for the penalty goal to make it a six point lead at the break, 10-4.
The Roosters found their feet mid-second half as the video referee awarded Joseph Leilua a try after and obstruction was ruled out on Wade Graham earlier in the play. Mortimer's conversion fell to the right of the posts. The gap closed to two, Sharks 10-8.
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves had two encounters with the match officials which saw him placed on report. On both occasions, Todd Carney took the penalty goal attempts. Inside the final five minutes, the Sharks held a 14-8 lead.
A costly mistake from the Sharks gave the Roosters prime position to send the game into extra time. With two minutes to play, Aiden Guerra jumped through to post the match-levelling try off a Mitchell Pearce kick. Mortimer converted to lock the game up at 14-all at the end of regular time.
Both sides failed to capitalise on points in the extra time period with no less than seven attempts at the one-pointer. A lacklustre golden point period ended with both sides leaving Toyota Stadium with one competition point.
Looking ahead to Round 19, the Sharks take a road trip down south to take on the Dragons at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, while the Roosters face their arch rivals in South Sydney at Allianz Stadium.
