Rd 6 of the 2004 NRL season consisted of 5 away team favourites, as well as the Bulldogs playing a 'home' game in Wellington v the Warriors. This scenario traditionally leads to a busy week for bookies and some very large positions or 'stands'. This week has proved that theory totally correct, with all of our regular large punters out in force, putting their money where their mouth is. The Warriors were well supported on Friday night, but continued to disappoint their fans, with the final score flattering the average New Zealanders. With the Kiwi national side playing Australia this coming Friday, the Warriors poor form in the NRL has to be a very large headache for Kiwi national selectors. Those punters who gave the Warriors 'one last chance' on Friday night, will be thinking twice before they do it again. The biggest upset of the week came on Saturday, with Cronulla finding form and toppling Canberra. The Raiders were the best backed team of the week, so punters were licking their wounds to start Saturday off. They certainly fought back that night though, with a popular Storm side embarrassing Souths, and a Darren Lockyer field goal proving the killer for SportOdds, with the 7 point margin just covering the 6.5 point line that everyone wanted to take about the Broncos. Our biggest bets of the week were a winning $30k wager on Melbourne to cover the 13.5 point line, a losing $60k on the Raiders -5.5, and a $110k wager on the Roosters to beat the Knights by the 4.5 point line in their return to Energy Australia Stadium on Sunday. Coming up is the traditional ANZAC Test match between the Kangaroos and the Kiwison Friday night at Newcastle, and all the betting focus this week will be fairly and squarely on that game. Be careful betting early on Rd 7 of the NRL if your favourite players have to front up on Friday night in the Test and then back up for their club side over the weekend. I would suggest you wait for them to come through the Test unscathed before investing your hard earned.
