Tetley's Challenge Cup Review - Round 4

Super League took break this week as the teams started the road to Wembley in the 4th round of the Tetley’s Challenge Cup.

On Friday night Leeds Rhinos, who were looking for a fourth successive visit to Wembley, got the better of local rivals Castleford Tigers 28-12 at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Kallum Watkins got things under way for the Rhinos but the Tigers played their part as NRL Bound Rangi Chase and Jamie Ellis gave the visitors a 12-10 lead going into the Final quarter.

However, Leeds Showed their class with a three try burst in a nine minutes spell which included a Danny McGuire brace to book their place in the fifth round draw.

In the only other all Super League game Hull KR triumphed 26-18 over twelve man St Helens at MS3 Craven Park.

Rovers built up a 10-0 lead with tries from Craig Hall and Mickey Paea before Saints were reduced to twelve men as Francis Meli was given his marching orders for a bad looking high Tackle on Hall, after the Rovers Centre had made a break from inside his own half.

Trailing 16-6 at the interval, St Helens  would not let their numerical advantage get in their way as they showed real spirit by hitting back to lead 18-16 with tries from Ade Gardner, Paul Wellens and Mark Percival,

However, the extra man counted in the end as Greg Eden and Liam Salter saw Hull KR home as Saints suffered an early exit for the first time since 1995.

Championship side Batley Bulldogs took Huddersfield Giants the distance only losing 13-4 at Mount Pleasant.

The Bulldogs were full value for their 4-0 half time lead. Gareth Moore's first-half kick into the corner was brilliantly caught by Gareth Potts.

Shaun Lunt scored two tries in two minutes to save Huddersfield from an embarrassment and they were also helped with the boot of Danny Brough as the Giants just about enough to claim their place in the hat for the next round.

London Broncos were also given a real fright by Championship Club Featherstone Rovers as they finally saw them off 24-12 at the Twickenham Stoop.

In tight first half Ian Hardman scored the only points for the West Yorkshire side as they led 4-0.

Luke Dorn and Kirk Dixon both scored late on as the Londoners did just about enough to win the game in the second period. Hardman and Andy Kain were the Rovers try scores as they fell just short of a shock win.

Elsewhere, everything went to plan as there was no real chance of any shocks. Holders Warrington Wolves and Super League Leaders Wigan Warriors both had big wins over lower league opponents as they advanced into round 5.
