Dolphin Oval hoodoo continues as Redcliffe smash Wynnum
Wynnum have not won a first grade game against Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval since 1984 and today was no different. The Dolphins were all class smashing the Seagulls 40 - 18.
Redcliffe are making a habit of letting in an early try and today it was winger Simon Phillips who crossed the line after 5 minutes of play to give Wynnum the early lead. Dolphins fans didn't have to wait long though before Ben Jones evened the scores, the Damien Richters conversion putting them in front 6 - 4.
After half an hour of play the game was delicately poised with Redcliffe leading 14 - 8 when some amazing handling led to a thrilling try to Michael Roberts. Redcliffe had stepped up a gear and the game was under their control. At half time they led 18 - 8.
The second half was but a few seconds old when rookie hooker Gavin Cooper slammed through the defense and ran 40 metres before offloading to Phil Shilvock who sprinted away to score under the posts. A Wade Bachman try gave Wynnum fans glimmer of hope moments later but in the 52nd minute Mickael Roberts finished them off with a perfectly timed inside ball sending Shane Perry over under the posts.
Gavin Cooper was a revelation at hooker and had a blinder. He was rewarded for his efforts with a late try. Captain and veteran Troy "Cowboy" Lindsay showed the dedication needed for his new role playing the first half without a break. All in all a great day for the Dolphins with everyone performing well.
Next week the club travels to Davies Park on Sunday to take on Souths-Logan in all grades.
Redcliffe 40 (Shilvock 3, Jellick, Perry, Roberts, Jones, Cooper tries; Richters 4 (from 8) goals) def Wynnum 18 (Phillips 2, Bourke, Bachman tries; Bourke goal)
In BRL A Grade it was a grand final reply with the opposite result. In a heated game Wynnum were too good winning 30 - 14 after Redcliffe led 10 - 6 at the break.
Luke Bishop had a barnstorming comeback from retirement but it was not the Dolphins day.
Wynnum 30 (Ogden 2, LaFaele, Troutman, Bain tries; Hoggart 5 goals) def Redcliffe 14 (Pellow, Barnes, O'Grady tries; Georgetown goal)
In the Colts Redcliffe overcame an ordinary first half to romp home to win 40 - 28 after trailing 24 - 12. The Dolphins defended gallantly on their tryline on many occasions and in the end this was the difference. Chris Torrington had a great day with the boot sinking 6 from 7 despite a strong cross-wind. Hooker Peter Delaivuna scored two great tries from dummy half.
Redcliffe 40 (Fallini , Delaivuna 2, Simpson, Murphy, Coutts tries; Torrington 6 (from 7) goals) def Wynnum 28 (Newton 3, Hewtt, Anschau tries; Attell 4 goals)
