The Broncos have continued their poor start to their grand final defense with a scrappy and ill-disciplined performance against the New Zealand Warriors, the home side running out 24-14 winners at Mt Smart Stadium today.
After leading 10-2 early in the second half through tries to Shane Perry and Sam Thaiday, the Warriors rallied together and piled on 22 unanswered points as the Broncos started to drop the ball and give away stupid penalties.
The Warriors first try came with the Warriors attacking the Broncos line, and captain Steve Price barged over from close range. Their next try came just four minutes later after Michael Witt put in what seemed like a poor kick, but got the right result as it rebounded off legs and the Warriors regathered with six more tackles. They only needed one though, and the Warriors quickly spread the ball wide out to Tony Martin, who ran and committed two Bronco defenders before passing inside to Michael Crockett for the try. Tony Martin converted both the tries.
Michael Witt grabbed the third Warriors try four minutes later after a both Karmichael Hunt and Justin Hodges failed to clean up a Grant Rovelli grubber, and Witt was trailing to grab the spoils. Tony Martin missed an absolute sitter, with his conversion hitting the upright, but made no mistake just two minutes later, after the Warriors went the length of the field in 5 tackles for Crockett to grab a double. Michael Witt chipped and regathered mid field, then quickly spread the ball out to Crockett, who beat Karmichael Hunt to the line, and put the Warriors in front at the break 24-10.
A forgettable second half from both teams resulted in only one try being scored, and a contentious one at that with Brent Tate seemingly tackled by Manu Vatuvei, yet he got up and continued on to score in the 45th minute. Referee Paul Simpkins elected not to go to video ref Phil Cooley, and awarded the try on the spot.
The rest of the second half was filled with half-chances and knock-ons, as the Warriors constantly threatened to put the Broncos to the sword, yet couldn't quite find the killed blow.
The Broncos started the game the better of the two teams, with a beautiful solo try from Shane Perry, who chipped and regathered on his way to the line. The next try was scored by Sam Thaiday, after the Broncos worked the ball from right to left into Thaidays hands, who then barged over in the left corner. Thaiday made one conversion from two attempts, with Joel Moon missing with his only attempt.
Both sides have a nervous wait ahead of them, with Civoniceva and Carroll put on report for the Broncos, and Wade McKinnon on report for the Warriors.
The Broncos host the Panthers at Suncorp next Friday night, with the Panthers coming off a sensational 40-10 drubbing of the Bulldogs. The Warriors travel to Olympic Park on Sunday in what will no doubt be a clash of epic proportions against the Storm.
