Wildcats put Vikings to the sword

Relegated Widnes were put to the sword 46-6 by a Wakefield team eager to please coach Tony Smith and their suffering fans after three straight defeats.

It was not the most thrilling game ever played at Belle Vue with Widnes looking a beaten unit from very early on in the engage Super League match.

But the visitors got their game together a bit more in the second half and managed to slow down the Wakefield scoring juggernaut.

The Wildcats ended with eight tries in total, finalising that tally with two second-half tries.

Kevin Henderson broke the second-half deadlock with a try on 53 minutes, his first for the club and Dave March converted.

And on 62 minutes prop Darrell Griffin fell on an astute kick through from man of the match Sam Obst.

March again goaled to take his tally to seven from eight attempts.

Widnes started the game with some gusto and really rocked Wakefield on their heels in the opening couple of minutes.

But four tries in the first 18 minutes killed off that initial fighting spirit.

Obst, Ollie Elima, Jamie Field and Sid Domic all crossed the whitewash for the Wildcats with hooker March converting the first three to make it 22-0.

But credit Widnes, they hit back and the first time they had the ball in the Wakefield half they scored.

Winger Gray Viane was held on his back, but fast hands found half-back Stephen Myler out wide who crossed for a try which he converted himself.

Any hopes travelling fans had of a fightback were kicked into touch three minutes later when Jeffries and March combined to send Domic in for his second try, again goaled by March.

And a minute from the break Elima intercepted a wayward pass from Viane to stroll in for his second try, again converted by March to effectively kill the game off at 34-6.

But if Wakefield are to beat Hull and Leeds in their remaining two league games they will have to play much better than this.
